[Bug 956063] New: All Snapshots won't boot
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956063 Bug ID: 956063 Summary: All Snapshots won't boot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader Assignee: jsrain@suse.com Reporter: wodenhof@daad-alumni.de QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- When I try to boot any snapshot the following happens: select snapshot xy <enter> new menu, asking whether to boot snapshot xy <enter> new menu, saying like "If everything works okay, enter "snapper rollback" ... nothing more happens. Pressing any key will not have any response, but <ctrl><alt><del> will initialize a new boot sequence. If one omits the second <enter> and waits out the preset delay, one gets a black screen with some text like "Default as well as alternative entries could not be booted (in German: "Sowohl die Vorgabe als auch die Alternativeinträge konnten nicht gebootet werden.") Is there any setting up needed to use snapper? Right now it is unaltered the way it was installed. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Do I get the report right that you will not get out of the GRUB menu to actually boot kernel? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956063 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956063#c2 --- Comment #2 from Matthias Schünemann <wodenhof@daad-alumni.de> --- Yes, snapper is installed (I have snapshots after all), and the error message is "...could not be booted". I assume this is from GRUB2. Certainly there is no disk-activity nor can I get a console. HTH. Let me know if I can get some more information from the system/grub2. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956063 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956063#c3 --- Comment #3 from Michael Chang <mchang@suse.com> --- The first menu-entry you selected is used for description of snapshot menu itself (and how-to use it after you boot into it). The "bootable" menu-entries in that given snapshot are listed after it. Did they somehow not get listed ? Could you please attach your screenshot for your boot menu to help understanding the problem you have ? Thanks. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956063 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956063#c4 --- Comment #4 from Matthias Schünemann <wodenhof@daad-alumni.de> --- The snapshots get listed okay (there are three kinds, pre, post and extra(? doing that from memory). There are about a dozen snapshots. I can select any of them at will (highlighting it) and press enter. Then a new menu is displayed, saying something like "If everything works okay, enter "snapper rollback". Pressing enter here doesn't give any reaction, nothing more happens. Pressing any key will not have any response, but <ctrl><alt><del> will initialize a new boot sequence. Doing nothing, i.e. waiting for a timeout of the progress bar while "If everything works okay, enter "snapper rollback" is still displayed produces the black screen with text like "Default as well as alternative entries could not be booted (in German: "Sowohl die Vorgabe als auch die Alternativeinträge konnten nicht gebootet werden.") Sorry if my first description wasn't clear. I'll try a screenshot tonight (not in front of my machine right now) but I'll probably have to take photographs since I somehow doubt that Grub2 provides a screenshot facility ;-). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

The "Bootable snapshot #11" is only for descriptive information for this snapshot boot menu. You should boot the system via "SLES 12.1" or "Advanced options for SLES 12.1". -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Additionally just now I got an editor window (extra screenshot, after just randomly typing on the keyboard) and then was dumped in the grub2 command line (no screenshot). Created attachment 657229 [details] Boot sequence #3
The "openSUSE Leap 42.1" is the boot entry into your snapshot #176. The first entry "Bootable snapshot #176" is not used for boot but only to display information. We (mis)use menu entry title for displaying the information because no pure text label can be used in grub menu. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956063 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956063#c14 --- Comment #14 from Matthias Schünemann <wodenhof@daad-alumni.de> --- Ahhh, okay. Works, thank you. But the error persists when waiting for the timeout (finish of the progress bar, lower part of picture Boot-sequence-#3). As long as users don't know they _have_ to move the selection at least one line down... Suggestion: Set the grub2 default entry to the second line (the one with the actual boot entry). Additionally you might highlight the first line with blue background or red characters or whatever and prepend "Snapshot to be booted, don't select this entry" or some such information. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

To workaround your can explicitly specify the default entry. grub2-set-default "openSUSE Leap 42.1" It should help in new created snapshots to have correct default match the title rather than the default first entry. About your suggestion, thanks and we will take it into account as we are also having some discussion internally. For $subject, I think it's won't fix (as it works for you.)
