[Bug 1118859] New: Make Installation and Upgrade .desktop files translatable
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1118859 Bug ID: 1118859 Summary: Make Installation and Upgrade .desktop files translatable Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: All OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Live Medium Assignee: dimstar@opensuse.org Reporter: scootergrisen@gmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- After booting the live media i see these on the desktop: Installation Upgrade In these files: /usr/share/applications/installation.desktop /usr/share/applications/upgrade.desktop It says: Name=Installation Comment=Install the system from online repositories Name=Upgrade Comment=Upgrade an already installed system from online repositories The files does not contain translation. I would like for the strings to be translateable so i can translate them on Weblate or other way. Tested with openSUSE-Tumbleweed-KDE-Live-x86_64-Snapshot20181126-Media.iso in VirtualBox. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I can't see any strings for upgrade.desktop. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1118859 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1118859#c3 --- Comment #3 from Stanislav Brabec <sbrabec@suse.com> --- This is a pretty non-standard stuff. The upstream uses translations included into the desktop files. Many years ago, SUSE wanted to be able to provide post-release translation updates. As part of this effort, we patched GNOME (and maybe more software) to search for translations in the textdomain "desktop_translations". And there you are: msgunfmt /usr/share/locale/{your language}/LC_MESSAGES/desktop_translations.mo | grep -A1 "Install the system from online repositories" I think, that this feature is pretty confusing nowadays. And we are providing latest GNOME with each release, so we stopped to provide post-release updates of translation. I think we should slowly obsolete this. But it has a problem. desktop-translations duplicates upstream translation effort, but only 2 translations or so per package. So it would be very complicated to upstream all of our unique translations. If you want to create standard desktop file, then intltool can merge translations back to the desktop file. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
