I'd advise you to just use the HAL based mounting methods of the desktop environments, which will properly unmount the device before suspend. If you mounted it by hand, you are responsible to unmount it by hand, sorry (you _are_ root, so you should know what you are doing). It might be a kernel or util-linux bug that the machine still thinks that the device is mounted. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Actually, this bug is all about the kernel having to care that a device/disc has to be at the same location it has been before. So, a disk being /dev/sda must not be /dev/sdb or anything else after suspend/resume. I closed my work on 11.0, rebooted to factory, prepared the test, hibernated (my machine hybernates instead of suspending when gnome triggers it), powered on again... and the kernel hung. I took some photos. I rebooted, and at 50% of loading the image on swap, it hung again. I took some more photos. I copied to paper: Loading data pages 50% Kernel Bug at kernel/power/snapshot.c:518! invalid opcode: 0000 [#] SMP last sys file /sys/kernel/uevent_seqnum. ..and more I didn't copy. If you want the photos (bad quality, I'm afraid), ask tomorrow. I rebooted two more times and factory hung at the same place. I rebooted to 11.0, and it started to load the swap image as hibernation image, so I forced a reboot again, this time to 11.0 failsafe, allowed it to reconstruct damaged filesystems, and halted it in order to reboot normally - halt crashed also at the end. I'm finally on 11.0 without acomplishing anything, and I have wasted about two hours. (there is nothing on syslog, so don't ask for it) And this bug of kernel 2.6.27.4-2.1 at hibernation was already reported (Bug 440891). :-/ When you solve the hibernation bug, ask again and I'll try to get you the information you wanted. But make sure hibernation works, please. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The test consists of opening several partitions on an external hard disk, on USB, hibernating, and then thawing the machine (look up the complete description in Bug 439663, I was doing the same test). As the machine crashes before thawing, it is impossible to even have a look at the logs or issue any command at all. I was going to check this, when I was hit by bug 444780. Firefox master password is not accepted, I can't report, I have to retrieve bugzilla password from papersafe. I read, try to add a me-too note, and... computer hard locks: Bug 448007. I'm sorry chaps, I can not do any further reporting on this bug till I'm assured that 11.1 is stable enough. Instead of testing this device name thing, I have lost an hour or two on a new problem... and I don't know if the system will remain stable enough for me to try again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Now I have 11.1 GM, and I bypassed Bug 448007 by removing Beagle. Yes, when hibernating, the active /dev/sda dies and switches to sdb. Active sda mounts are unusable: /dev/sda1 on /mnt/usb/Amon_Din type reiserfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,noatime,user_xattr) /dev/sdb2 on /media/Eilenach__ type reiserfs (rw,nosuid, nodev) sda1 was manually mounted, sda2 automatically. The sda1 dies, sda2 reappears as sdb2. Can you also test the kernel from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/HEAD/ , please (ie. 2.6.29-rc7+ or better -rc8 when it's out)?
I have installed (via chroot in 11.0 to the 11.1 partition) these: kernel-debug-2.6.29-rc8.master_20090319171434_04fb8beb.i586.rpm kernel-debug-base-2.6.29-rc8.master_20090319171434_04fb8beb.i586.rpm kernel-debug-extra-2.6.29-rc8.master_20090319171434_04fb8beb.i586.rpm I have a question. This install (rpm --install etc) has changed the symlink "/boot/vmlinuz". Is there someway to avoid this behaviour? It is a nuisance, because I'm installing an extra kernel for testing, not a new default kernel. By the way, I forgot to mention that inside gnome, the hibernate options disappear from the menus when I boot with the rc8 kernel.
I'm suspending manually via command "powersave -U" as root in text mode, which normally works. You mean to use the command "s2disk" with no parameters?
Yes. You may need to edit /etc/suspend.conf to make the 'resume device' parameter point to the swap partition used for hibernating.
There is no man page for this command.
That's correct, it is low level.
Also, remember that there has been a DBus update recently.
"powersave -U" not working may be a DBus problem, but I'm interested whether or not the hibernation subsystem in the kernel works. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
