[Bug 363599] New: Vertical noise on video display with SIS driver at high resolution/ color depth
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=363599 Summary: Vertical noise on video display with SIS driver at high resolution/color depth Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: ms@novell.com ReportedBy: ducalen@sympatico.ca QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other Created an attachment (id=196248) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=196248) Output from lspci -vv I have an Intel D201GLY2 motherboard with sis graphics chipset. Using the sis video driver provided with openSUSE 10.3 results in vertical "noise" bars on my LCD display. The noise increases with higher resolution/color depths (i.e. 1680x1050@24bpp). To have a workable display there are 3 options; 1. Using the default sis driver, drop the resolution/depth to much lower levels than the native screen resoltion, in my case 1024x768@16bpp. 2. Use the vesa driver/resolutions, but my monitor's native resolution (1680x1050) is not supported. 3. Use the latest driver available from the intel site. The problem with this driver is that after the monitor wakes up from suspend, it switches to 1400x1050. The dotclock might be unstable. This means that the pixels are being sent out at a rate which is not exactly constant, and the monitor has problems keeping up yith this. A different configuration of the dotclock might result in a constant mode. Try the following modelines: Modeline "1680x1050" 146.50 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 +hsync -vsync Modeline "1680x1050" 146.00 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 +hsync -vsync This should get a different parameter set for the pll, and will hopefully give you a working mode. If this fixes it, then it is clearly a dotclock issue. 2) It could be that the dotclock (pixelclock) is too high for the panel. The modeline suggests that it is a mode with normal blanking: (II) SIS(0): Modeline "1680x1050" 146.25 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 +hsync -vsync If you try reduced blanking (cvt -r), you get: # 1680x1050 59.88 Hz (CVT 1.76MA-R) hsync: 64.67 kHz; pclk: 119.00 MHz Modeline "1680x1050R" 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 +hsync -vsync If this fix succeeds, then this doesn't mean that the issue is fully identified. Get a 1600x1200@60Hz capable CRT out, and force the original mode on it. If it still persists on the CRT, then it is the next issue. 3) this could be a FIFO/Buffering issue. And the buffer seems to be having trouble at the 48pixel mark (width / number of bands). I am worried about whether this testing can actually be done. I see some VBE calls in your log, and i hope that this is not used for modesetting directly. Because if it is used for modesetting, then the above tests will be hard to execute. So with each step, verify from the log that you are actually setting the desired mode. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Luc, I modified xorg.conf manually and tried the two modelines you suggested and there was no difference to the display quality. I compared the before and after xorg logs and I could see no differences, except for some minor differences in the EDID hex section. So I'm not sure if modifying the modelines actually took effect. I also tried the reduced blanking modeline, no improvement. xorg log reported: Not using mode "1680x1050R" (monitor doesn't support reduced blanking) I don't have a 1600x1200 CRT but I did hook up a 1280x1024 CRT and had the same issue at maximum resolution (see attached image - CRT sreenshot). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think my new changes took affect as I was able to see the new modelines in the log files. The new attached Xorg.0.logs are as follows; 1. xorg.conf-1 - new xorg.conf 2. Xorg.0.log.test1-1 = generated by test 1 modeline with openSUSE SIS driver 3. Xorg.0.log.test2-1 = generated by test 2 modeline with openSUSE SIS driver 4. Test 1-1 and 2-1 with the openSUSE SIS driver are still the same though - still vertical noise lines. There was some improvement with reduced blanking and the openSUSE driver. The noise lines were approx. half as narrow as with the other two modelines. The good news for me is that with the Intel driver and reduced blanking, the monitor no longer switches from 1680x1050 to 1400x1050 after resuming from standby/suspend. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

While i have a very high regard of him, he never used a CMS like cvs or git. So this is a lot of different things piled in together there, and very hard to detangle. Merging it with upstream is already a non-trivial task. * There is code in there which adds actual support for sis67x. Apparently the support that is in the current upstream driver was from before this hardware was actually available. This means that a lot of work, both in porting, testing and verification needs to be done to support this hardware. All in all, adding this support to our current driver is currently not feasible due to lack of hardware and lack of time. Maybe someone will do the work upstream, but there is unbelievably little movement there on both the taiwanese vendors drivers. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
