[Bug 916801] New: patterns-openSUSE-plasma5_basis conflicts with KF5 apps
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=916801 Bug ID: 916801 Summary: patterns-openSUSE-plasma5_basis conflicts with KF5 apps Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 201502* Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace Assignee: kde-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: jon@grossart.net QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- If you install the Plasma5 basis and then try to install any of the KF5-based applications, they conflict with the KDE4 version. You either have to not install the KF5 versions or deinstall the pattern, which prevents the pattern updating new packages in the future. Since this is based on KF5, it should probably default to the KF5 app versions instead of the old KDE4 versions. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Lets be clear in this, that Plasma 5 (KDE Frameworks 5) is NOT the default KDE desktop for openSUSE and is offered in many ways as a kind of technology preview. Only a few applications have been ported to KF5/Plasma 5 and therefore openSUSE still has KDE 4 as the KDE desktop.
This is also the reason why there is no pattern that would install all the required plasma 5 / KDE Framework 5 packages.
Based on your initial comments, you are talking here about the KDE4 patterns and you want to install the KF5 versions of some applications. As that the KF5 versions are using the same filenames, etc, we need to make them conflict with their KDE4 counterparts as that in the end either the KDE4 version works or the KF5 version works.
In the future when the decision is taken that KF5 will replace KDE4, we will create the correct patterns.
If an user installs kf5-session, then all the required dependencies to run a plasma 5 session are being pulled in. This excludes the KF5 based apps, because the user can still use the KDE4 versions which are much more stable than the KF5 ones
How about you stop making assumptions about what I'm doing? I know it's not the default. But the plasma5 basis is a total mess, and not being kept up with the releases of the upstream software. How do you expect people to test it when it by default installs in a partial state? If I install the plasma 5 basis, I expect it should pull in all the KF5 based apps if they exist for one of the packages, and not the KDE 4 SC version. (Which Hrvoje Senjan has already updated the pattern for, apprently). It pulls in konsole, not konsole5. It doesn't even pull in sddm, which is a requirement for Plasma 5 according to KDE. I don't expect KDE 4 patterns to pull in KF5 apps, but that idea isn't even up to date with KDE anymore. The current version of the applications is KDE 14.12 which contains KF5 version when available, or else the continued KDE 4 apps with versions updated. There isn't even a package that does that correctly. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

third point is that plasma packages themselves already are recommending some non-vital/required packages, so there is not much point adding them to either session or pattern packages. users w/o recommends ON should already know what are they doing, so they can cherry pick the addons as they like. kcm-gtk-config5 and kscreen5 fall into this category, as the desktop can startup just fine without them...
That's fine, but then the recommends list need to be updated. None of those modules are in the Recommends, and it still has KDM instead of SDDM. It installs oxygen-gtk, but leaves GTK3 setup to Adwaita with no KCM module to easily change it. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
