[Bug 1179920] New: Graphical desktop odes not run at full native (Retina) resolution on iMacPro under VMWare Fusion
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1179920 Bug ID: 1179920 Summary: Graphical desktop odes not run at full native (Retina) resolution on iMacPro under VMWare Fusion Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: VMWare OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org Assignee: gfx-bugs@suse.de Reporter: marc@msys.ch QA Contact: gfx-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Tumbleweed is run inside a VMWare Fusion VM on an iMacPro. VMWare display settings are set to use the full native resolution (5120 x 2880). Versions: iMacPro (2017), macOS 11.0.1, VMWare Fusion 12.1.0, Tumbleweed 20201209. The Gnome display settings dialog, however, lists 2560x1600 as the maximum display resolution, yielding a blurry image. FWIW, openSUSE Leap 15.2 on the same machine displays at the full native resolution, which in combination with 200% desktop scaling gives an extremely smooth display. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unfortunately I do not know, since I only started using Tumbleweed with version 20201207. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

That is, install Leap 15.2 kernel on top of your TW system while keeping the rest, and boot with Leap 15.2 kernel, retest. You can install the old kernel package with zypper install --oldpackage option. Also, give hwinfo outputs taken from both working and broken systems, and attach them to Bugzilla. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I will try to get that info and install a Leap kernel on Tumbleweed, once I found out how to do so. What I can already confirm is that Leap 15.2 runs flawlessly at full native resolution. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Aha, that's an interesting finding. I have no idea why the behavior differs wrt modesetting between X and Wayland. I can imagine that Leap 15.2 kernel on TW might show the same problem, though; i.e. it's something in Wayland that limits the resolution. Let's see. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

FWIW, another "bleeding edge" Linux distribution that also uses Wayland, Fedora 33, displays the desktop at full native retina resolution. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Looks like a regression in Wayland on Tumbleweed. No idea, why the Wayland desktop switches from the native resolution to a lower one. Makes no sense to me. I think we should reassign the bug to GNOME component. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1179920 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1179920#c16 --- Comment #16 from Marc Balmer <marc@msys.ch> --- Here is another strange observation: TL;DR: When I first login using Gnome on X.Org and then using GNom on Wayland, I see the full native resolution. - The iMac Pro has a native resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels - When I first login using Gnome with wayland, the maximum resolution being offered is 2560 x 1600 pixels - When I logout and re-login using Gnome on X.Org, the 5120 x 2880 resolution is offered as an option. So I select it and set desktop scaling at 200%, which gives a nice looking display. - When I logout and re-login using Gnome on wayland, the 5120 x 2880 resolution is again offered as an option. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
