[Bug 411183] New: [Intel 945G] slowdowns with latest Xorg updates
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=411183 Summary: [Intel 945G] slowdowns with latest Xorg updates Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: PC OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: kristjan.ugrin@gmail.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Today I did a full update (like every week) and there were also some updates from "11.0 Update" repository. This included xorg updates which made desktop effects from kde 4.1 sluggish on that particular card. I tried XAA (using by default) and EXA rendering methods - no difference. Downgrading Xorg to version on DVD resolved this issues. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Sure. It's the new default now. We've updated xorg-x11-server at the same time. Try with 'Option "MigrationHeuristic" "always"' (upstream default). This should give you an even worse performance. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I guess it wasn't obvious that I meant switching between greedy and always in my previous comment, but as I said I didn't run x11perf, this was just based on my desktop experience.
Ok. Maybe it doesn't matter on G33. On 945GM it does - based on my desktop experience. For others it did as well. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you attach a complete patch instead? The reference you gave seems to be a diff to an already existing patch. :-(
Hi Stefan This enabling of EXA not only slows down the performance for 945 users, It also considerably slows down the performance of Intel 965 users like me. The issues are -- Fully screen video playback is not perfect, Frame rate is not acceptable. -- Scrolling in Firefox is considerably slow. But the point is, Disabling Compiz might improve the performance when EXA enabled. But it is not acceptable as, Compiz is now become very much a necessity. Even enabling KDE 4 Compositing slows down the performance noticeably. So i suggest reassign this bug report for Intel 965 IGP users too. If possible implement the XV overlay for Intel 965 IGP users too. If XV overlay is not implementable for Intel 965 IGP, i suggest please provide latest Intel drivers that might improve performance. As in XV, i am unable to use my webcam built into my Laptop. Or At least add support for Intel Batch driver argument, as it highly speeds up the performance for Ubuntu users litterally equaling to XAA. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I assume this is the patch for which a diff is mentioned in comment #17. I still don't know where to find this patch. Waiting for feedback by Geoff.
If XV overlay is not implementable for Intel 965 IGP, i suggest please provide latest Intel drivers that might improve performance.
So you suggest to blindly updating to an untested driver? Yes, I've seen the announcement for xf86-video-intel 2.4.0. [...] * Improved 965 exa render performance
As in XV, i am unable to use my webcam built into my Laptop.
At the moment XV works with EXA, but not with XAA and Composite enabled.
At least add support for Intel Batch driver argument, as it highly speeds up the performance for Ubuntu users litterally equaling to XAA.
What the hell is this BATCH variable? I've seen it mentioned in the Ubuntu bugreport too, but I still have no idea what it is supposed to do. It must be one more special patch Ubuntu is using. Stefan,
greedy hueristics make no noticable performance change here (I didn't rerun benchmarks). Jeff and I pretty much both run openSUSE 11.0, Gnome, Compiz, Gnome-Terminal. I run with desktop effects, unsure as to jeff, but I assume he does the same.
As mentioned in the other report, the performance degredation is enough to make the system frustrating to work on (waiting for firefox to scroll, waiting for pgup/pgdn in vim to respond, etc)
-g
Geoff I want to clarify you one important point, Atleast in Intel 965 based IGP There is no performance degradation in EXA when Greedy Heuristics used without enabling Desktop Effects, So you will see the effectiveness of Gready Heuristics only if you disable Desktop Effects and EXA is not that bad if Desktop Effects not running, -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For Intel 965 IGP users like me, if possible, enable EXA only if Compiz is not used.
Not possible. EXA is enabled during configuration. compiz is enabled on-the-fly.
Also please try to provide the latest Intel driver as a experimental driver, in different name, at-least via Build Service, so that advanced users like me can easily update to it at the same time, if that latest driver isn't stable users would be able to switch to old stable driver, Fedora also did the same with their experimental Intel driver.
--> X11:XOrg project
Regarding Intel_Batch, we don't need to worry about it as compiz exports that variable by default upon start up. Basically it is not any ubuntu specific stuff, it is driver related option.
There doesn't exist such an option in the intel driver. Also not as an environment variable for Mesa DRI driver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So all in all you don't see a regression, Raghu. Is this correct?
Performance wise there is no regression. But functionality wise there is a regression as i am no longer be able use my webcam and most of the videos are not playing in Windowed Mode. But i have to say that all video files are playing perfectly in Full-Screen Mode using XVideo under Compiz-Fusion in Kaffeine media player that uses Xine back-end. Webcam functionality and Video Playback in Windowed Mode was working perfectly in XAA if Compiz-Fusion or Desktop Effects in KDE 4 are not enabled. Stefan,
xf86XVFillKeyHelperDrawable is a colour key helper function for XV+compositing window managers. It shouldn't be causing this.
So this hunk should always be added, not matter if we use EXA/XAA, Textured/Overlay Xvideo, right? @raghu,
If you add:
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
To your xorg.conf does the problem go away? Does the problem go away if you disable a compositing window manager? Are you connected to multiple displays? What exact hardware are you on?
Hi Geoff When i add EXA as AccelMethod, the problem seems to go away, But the Frame rate is not perfect, decreases more in Full Screen. Scrolling is also very slow in Firefox 3. Disabling Compositing Window Manager while in XAA doesn't fix the issue. I am not connected to multiple monitors. My Integrated Graphics Chipset is Intel(R) 965GM . aka Intel X3100. I have created a pastebin entry contain some more information about by IGP. I request Stefan also to take a look at it. http://pastebin.com/m2d178bc4 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Raghu, thanks a lot for testing.
XAA + TexturedVideo was the default for our initial intel driver on OS 11.0. Are you still claiming you see a regression with the new driver after enabling this combination manually? I no longer see a difference to the initial driver sources with this combination configured.
I am not seeing any regression in the current driver regarding XAA + TexturedVideo In your initial intel driver also i was not able to watch movies or Webcam that use XVideo Extension.
You can disable TexturedVideo also for EXA. Maybe this is what you want. On my 965GM this was a lot faster for fullscreen videos when having it enabled (default).
As i have posted in my previous reply i tried that combination also, In EXA + Video Overlay, both Webcam and Movies are working Perfectly. But EXA is not compatible with Compiz, So i am using XAA. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Which driver settings? Sure that this didn't occur with the initial driver yet? Please verify.
It happens always in all configuration with Compiz-Fusion in Stock Driver too. If Compiz-Fusion disabled it is not happening, so it is not a regression. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(Sigh.) Sentence 1 and sentence 2 cannot both be correct. Adding the "option handling for textured video" has now resulted in a reproducible regression. (And it's actually a bit worse than I originally described. The entire video displays as blue, with no image whatsoever until resized. Then the vastly oversaturated and yellowed image appears in the video.)
Stefan, If this is true, it sounds like he's getting pushed into overlay mode somehow. According to wikipedia this can be a GM960 or a GM965, I'm wondering if we're pushing the 960 into the 965 codepath needlessly? This is an interesting conundrum if so. I'd vote for correct operation over performance in a default setting. Video playback is a rather common function. [Is it better to add 2 plus 2 quickly and get 5, or add 2 plus 2 slower and get 4? :-)]
In what area(s) were you observing slower performance? How much slower? For what it's worth I perceive no performance difference, although aside from video playback my normal desktop use is vanilla (2D, basic windowing, no Compiz, no OpenGL, etc.)
But we want to have it working with compiz, so we can't use TexturedVideo. Again, read comment #30.
I guess the other path is to figure out why playback without TexturedVideo has this bug.
Yes, please figure it out (Intel no longer cares about XAA, so they won't help here), attach the patch and reopen this bugreport. Just reading here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-684770.html
So, if all that's correct, XAA/TexturedVideo works great without Compiz. So maybe what we're looking at to make things work reasonably well out of the box (with the current driver states) are these sets of conservative defaults:
Compiz off, XAA on, TexturedVideo on, Xv on Compiz on, XAA on, TexturedVideo off, Xv off
Not sure what you mean with Xv. Overlay? When compiz on, both off?!?
Is this even possible, to have different defaults depending on Compiz?
Unfortunately that's not possible. compiz is an X11 application running on top of the Xserver. TexturedVideo a driver option, which you can't change after Xserver has been started and you suddenly decided to start or terminate compiz now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Case 2 (proposed): Compiz works but slower (and it's an optional feature anyway, both for installation and then for activation, and doesn't work on all hardware anyway), and video playback works. Maybe document this in the release notes, similar to what was done in OpenSUSE 10.3 with Intel ipw/iwl wireless.
What you're suggesting is that the performance of an eye candy feature (but apparently not the function of it) takes precedence over the actual functioning of a very basic capability, playing back any motion video, right? I think that's...strange. And most Compiz users aren't going to be happy watching blue boxes instead of videos either, so it isn't just about Compiz.
EXA does not degrade performance just when compiz was running. OK, how about letting Compiz's RPM flip TexturedVideo off if there's an intel driver section in xorg.conf (and back on as part of its RPM removal)? That'd be one way. I think it'd still be the wrong way to go, but at least it'd be better than the current situation.
This won't work due to 1) compiz installed before xorg.conf is written 2) installed compiz doesn't mean at all that it will be used
But I think we're making this too complicated here. Let's examine the choice set once again resulting from the default settings....
Case 1 (current situation): Compiz works, video playback completely broken (in xine-based players, for example). I think most end users (including me) would find this grossly unacceptable. Their computers cannot do what a simple television can in this state.
I could not reproduce this issue at all with my 965GM (same chip as yours), so please don't conclude that most end users are affected by this.
Again, with XAA/TexturedVideo compiz does *not* work.
What you're suggesting is that the performance of an eye candy feature (but apparently not the function of it) takes precedence over the actual functioning of a very basic capability, playing back any motion video, right?
Apparently you're ignoring my comments. I don't want to discuss this any longer. Please use the workaround with the TexturedVideo option. At the moment I'm not aware of any person, who is affected by your issue. It doesn't make sense to change the default to a setting, of which we know it brakes compiz for a lot of users. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
