We've also switched from sysvinit-init to systemd. After a reboot, the machine fails to boot. It displays a welcome message for emergency mode and asks me for the root users password. In journalctl -b, I can see that it failed to mount /dev/dm-1 to /wwwcache. I've enabled multipathd with systemctl enable. But according to journalctl, it doesn't get started. If I uncomment the corresponding line in /etc/fstab, the system boots fine and multipathd.service gets executed. I'll attach a journalctl output, when I'm in the rescue shell again. There is an init.d script for device-mapper (/etc/init.d/boot.device-mapper), but I'm not able to start it, as there is a symbolic link in /usr/lib/systemd/system from device-mapper.service to /dev/null, so the service is masked iirc. I don't know exactly what is responsible for setting up the device-mapper und multipath stuff. I had a similar issue with openSuSE 12.2. The dm device wasn't ready as the underlying scsi devices were not present. The QLogic kernel module qla2xxx was loaded to late. The workaround was, to add the QLogic module qla2xxx to INITRD_MODULES in /etc/sysconfig/kernel. Is there any other output I could provide you to help you finding the cause of the issue? I've lots of machines with attachted FC disks which I can't upgrade for now. The system stays in the emergency mode. dmsetup ls --tree reports "no devices found", and multipath -ll says "DM multipath kernel driver not loaded". but if I start the network in the emergency mode with 'rcnetwork start', the system boots normally and the dm device gets mounted. If I understand that right, the first thing that must happen is loading the qla2xxx module in order to provide the system with the attached FC disks (either already in initrd phase or later). If the FC devices show up, systemd (or together with udev and/or multipathd.service) has to load the device mapper kernel stuff and setup the devices. Finally the fstab entry with the dm disk is mounted by the local-fs.target job. But therefor, systemd needs to know/detect, that /dev/dm-X requires a fully initialized device mapper and ceate a dependency for that. I was googling a bit, but I didn't find anybody out there with similar issues also on other distributions. No, it is "cosmetic": using a preset ensure the policy to enable or not a service is not part of the package but elsewhere and can be overriden. But OTOH, preset only applies on initial package install, not upgrade. And for some packages, it is stupid to not enable to service when package is installed. But in our particular case, multipath-tools package is almost alway installed, so enabling this service unconditionnaly might not be a good idea either.. The dm-1 entry is just mounted later in the boot process, after the multipath service has been started. Perhaps you should add that information somewhere in the wikis or in some other place, where users usually look for help. I added the nofail option as you told me to and I can confirm that the machine boots now. The dm-1 entry is just mounted later in the boot process, after the multipath service has been started.

Perhaps you should add that information somewhere in the wikis or in some other place, where users usually look for help. Or is this just a workaround and there may be a fix for systemd to see that dm-1 depends on multipathd.service?

Well, I don't know the relation among nofail, systemd and multipathd.service but I think the parameter nofail is something essential. It solved the following problems: 1. landed in the emergency mode during/after installation (my own experience); 2. Network Manager not working (KDE desktop, my own experience); 3. Encrypted home partition (someone's experience, somewhere in Bugzilla). It's worth pointing out in the 2nd case as I put nofail to the fstab and saved the file and found that the status of NM from "(not connected)" to configured ("not connected" disappeared) even without rebooting. I suppose if someone updates, upgrades a system or cleanly installs a system but wants to keep his home partition untouched he might have encountered problems like above mentioned or even more. Generally speaking if one wants to keep his home partition untouched and found problems during or after installation, the suggestion to put nofail in fstab could be a help. It should be a workaround. I've upgraded one of our backup mailservers, and the the configured fstab entries are not mounted (need to say that there is an LVM between dm-multipath and the FS). I've attached a journalctl output of the last boot. It looks like lvm services are started *before* the fc disks are visible to the system and the dm-multipath targets are created. Using an initrd with qla2xxx included solves the issue, the dm-multipath targets are created before lvm is started and therefor my fstab entries are mounted, and multipath including all of the paths (for comparison, I've also attached the hournalctl output of such a boot). I'm curious about the solution, because on another system (with fc disks, but no lvm), when qla2xxx is included in the initrd, multipath uses only half of the paths (more exactly only the paths from the first port). A "systemctl restart multipathd" brings up the missing paths. But if I remove qla2xxx from the INITRD_MODULES and rebuild the initrd, all paths are used. In openSUSE 12.3 I had to add qla2xxx to INITRD_MODULES, otherwise dm-multipath was started and had no disks to merge. Both boots where done without qla2xxx in the initrd. The only difference was a "_netdev" option for the two devices in /etc/fstab. I rebooted one more time with the _netdev option and the devices where mounted. Removing them and rebooting the system several times lead to the devices beeing sometimes mounted, sometimes not. I've googled a bit and found some hints for setting use_lvmetad=1 in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf and enable lvm2-lvmetad.service to activate lvm. I've rebooted several times and it looks like it works.
