[Bug 659406] New: backing store does not work when window is iconified
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=659406 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=659406#c0 Summary: backing store does not work when window is iconified Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lucio@lambrate.inaf.it QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=404754) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=404754) /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf as edited User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060911 SUSE/1.5.0.7-1.5 Firefox/1.5.0.7 I needed to enable X11 backing store for a couple of application (one is IDL, [Interactive Data Language], the other one is my own) on a freshly installed 11.3 system. I was previously using suse 9.2 on another system, on which I enabled backing store as follows : adding Option "BackingStore" "True" to section "Device" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The raw 11.3 has no backing store enabled (so the content of the windows generated by the affected applications is lost, partially or in full, when the window is obscured by other windows, or iconified). On the 11.3 system there is no longer /etc/X11/xorg.conf so after reading man pages I added Option "BackingStore" "True" to file 50-device.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d. After restart of the X server (log off and log in), I confirm that Xorg.0.log shows correctly (**) (0): Option "BackingStore" "true" (**) (0): Backing store enabled" After this the content of the windows is preserved when they are partially obscured by another window, and also when they are made sticky, or moved to another page of the same desktop (I use fvwm). However when the window is iconified, or moved to a different desktop, its content is lost. This is not a fvwm feature, since another user with the default KDE shows the same problem (windows get black when iconified or moved to different desktop). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: As prerequisite one needs an application which requires the X server to mantain the backing store. Since one of them is my own, I make reference here to the commercial product IDL (Interactive Data Language). 1. start idl 2. make a plot (e.g. plot,[1,2,3],[1,4,9] 3. move the plot window behind another window 4. move it back to front 5. move plot window to different page in same desktop (fvwm) 6. go to page and check content 7a.1) move plot window to another desktop 7a.2) go there and check content or 7b.1) iconify plot window 7b.2) deiconify it Actual Results: 2) the plot appears 4) plot is unchanged 6) plot is unchanged 7a.2) window is entirely black 7b.2) window is entirely black Expected Results: 2) the plot appears 4) plot is unchanged 6) plot is unchanged 7a.2) plot is unchanged 7b.2) plot is unchanged provided in forum http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/hardware/451322-x11-backing...
