[Bug 906714] New: Mono server application crashes on recent Linux kernel
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=906714 Bug ID: 906714 Summary: Mono server application crashes on recent Linux kernel Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: 13.2 Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 13.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other Assignee: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: jamesh@bluewallgroup.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- After upgrading to OpenSuSE 13.2, my server application (on Mono) crashes to the shell prompt. The application was very stable in SuSE 13.1. Here is a stack trace of one of the crashes: http://pastebin.com/Rcxy6WrS . A fellow developer on the project has has confirmed that Mono is crashing on other platforms as well when using Linux kernel versions greater than 3.11. I can confirm that reverting back to OpenSuSE 13.1 causes the crashes to disappear. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Your backtrace looks as though there are hundreds of threads running. So maybe something about threads and locks changed in the kernel. Would be nice if you could give a small/simple reproducer for this problem. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=906714 --- Comment #2 from James Hughes <jamesh@bluewallgroup.com> --- The application is OpenSimulator, server for virtual world applications. "http://opensimulator.org" and many of the threads are scripts running objects running in the "world". I intentionally made objects using timed events and sleeps to accelerate the crashes. I'm not sure how to replicate the issue outside of OpenSimulator. But, I would gladly provide any assistance needed to bring up an instance. I will see if it happens in a VM and post the results back here. If it does, then maybe that would help? Thanks -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=906714 --- Comment #3 from Matthias Mailänder <matthias@mailaender.name> --- I don't think this is a problem of the openSUSE mono packaging. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=906714 --- Comment #4 from James Hughes <jamesh@bluewallgroup.com> --- I can technically agree with that point. But, there is in issue with the version of Mono packaged with 13.2. So, the question is, do we close this report and hope the Mono gets updated, or leave it open and try to escalate the issue with the Mono team and close the bug when it is fixed in OpenSuSE? Thanks -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=906714 --- Comment #5 from Bernhard Wiedemann <bwiedemann@suse.com> --- Then best try to work with upstream mono on a fix please add a link on such a bug-report here. This bug then can be left open until this fix comes in or be closed as RESOLVED UPSTREAM (a variant I like not so much because others hitting this same open issue do not find it as open then) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=906714 --- Comment #6 from James Hughes <jamesh@bluewallgroup.com> --- Thanks, One of the other members of my team filed a report with the mono team. Here is the link ... https://bugzilla.xamarin.com/show_bug.cgi?id=24755 It seems that xamarin are presently occupied with the dotnet code drop by Microsoft a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully we can see that this is resolved upstream and make sure the updates are propagated into OpenSuSE before closing this. I will make updates here as they become available. A side note, some users are reporting that they do not see the issue in Ubuntu with similar kernel and Mono versions. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=906714 Mircea Kitsune <sonichedgehog_hyperblast00@yahoo.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |sonichedgehog_hyperblast00@ | |yahoo.com --- Comment #8 from Mircea Kitsune <sonichedgehog_hyperblast00@yahoo.com> --- I can perfectly confirm this issue! I'm unable to run OpenSim for more than a few minutes before it randomly crashes with all sorts of errors, which are clearly not a fault in its code. I never had this problem on openSUSE 13.1, but it's there on 13.2. If this indeed affects all Mono programs, I'd say Mono is basically unusable on openSUSE 13.2 right now. The problem might however be a general Mono or Kernel issue. So in this case I figure openSUSE needs to do one of two things to fix it: Check if any of the default Kernel / Mono settings are at fault and change them, and include the first Mono version or Kernel which will fix the problem as an urgent bugfix. I hope someone with more understanding than me can look in-depth at what is happening soon. I'm confused how it could stay unsolved for so many months now, and was hoping the day when Linux users experienced such major breakages were long past. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm not sure whether this was fixed in 13.2 but it may have been unlikely. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
