https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=242934 Summary: USB external disk 'device not accepting address' Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mvdv@spamcop.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Hi, My own fault for not spending a few days reading around before trying/doing the following: Plug in a new external usb drive (details below). Use yast to partiton the drive, as ext3, no automount (details below). There are no error reported. Unplug the drive and plug back in to the usb port. Now the drive isn't recognized byu the system. Before trying to report this as a bug, I'd appreciate any suggestions - I'm new to linux (having just switched from XP), so am finding it very ironic to constantly read suggestions along the lines of: 'plug the device in to Windoze to format' and then you should be able to access from Linux.... is this really my only chance? I don't have access to windows - It seems I was foolish enough to remove it from my computers.... sad.gif /etc/fstab entry is /dev/disk/by-id/usb-LaCie_BigDisk_Extreme_AAE0830D2809-part1 /media/taq ext3 user,noauto,acl,user_xattr 0 0 there is no such 'file/link' (?) in /dev/disk/by-id The messages I can see when I plug the device in are: Feb 7 11:52:08 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 Feb 7 11:52:08 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: new device found, idVendor=059f, idProduct=0525 Feb 7 11:52:08 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: new device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 Feb 7 11:52:08 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: Product: BigDisk Extreme Feb 7 11:52:08 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: Manufacturer: LaCie Group.SA Feb 7 11:52:08 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: SerialNumber: AAE0830D2809 Feb 7 11:52:08 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Feb 7 11:52:08 mv-laptop kernel: scsi14 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices Feb 7 11:52:08 mv-laptop kernel: usb-storage: device found at 3 Feb 7 11:52:08 mv-laptop kernel: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning Feb 7 11:52:15 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 Feb 7 11:52:18 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110 Feb 7 11:52:34 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110 Feb 7 11:52:34 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 Feb 7 11:52:37 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110 Feb 7 11:52:52 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110 Feb 7 11:52:52 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 Feb 7 11:53:03 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device not accepting address 3, error -110 Feb 7 11:53:03 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 Feb 7 11:53:13 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device not accepting address 3, error -110 Feb 7 11:53:13 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 3 Feb 7 11:53:13 mv-laptop kernel: scsi 14:0:0:0: scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery Feb 7 11:53:13 mv-laptop kernel: usb-storage: device scan complete Feb 7 11:53:14 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4 Feb 7 11:53:17 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110 Feb 7 11:53:32 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110 Feb 7 11:53:32 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5 Feb 7 11:53:35 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110 Feb 7 11:53:47 mv-laptop syslog-ng[2851]: STATS: dropped 0 Feb 7 11:53:50 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110 Feb 7 11:53:51 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 6 Feb 7 11:54:01 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device not accepting address 6, error -110 Feb 7 11:54:01 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 7 Feb 7 11:54:12 mv-laptop kernel: usb 1-1: device not accepting address 7, error -110 Finally, as some have suggested since 2004, if I try rmmod ehci_hcd; modprobe ehci_hcd or rmmod uhci_hcd; modprobe uhci_hcd there is no improvement, in fact my system goes hay-wire for a time - I don't recommend this to anyone. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
