I have tried booting with "nomodeset".
Now I have:
~> glxinfo | grep vend
server glx vendor string: SGI
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
~> lsmod | grep radeon
radeon 942673 0
ttm 64252 1 radeon
drm_kms_helper 32687 1 radeon
drm 191946 3 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit 5402 1 radeon
Results are pretty same as in previous test
After connecting external monitor I don't get notification about new monitor. I
launch Display Settings manually and configure external monitor to 1920x1080.
Then I disconnect it - and still no notification. Again, I open Display
Settings - and there laptop's resolution is already set to 1280x800 but the
desktop remained with no changes, 1920x1080. I need set it to 800x600 and
immediately revert - this way I get true 1280x800
So, from the 3 test cases (ATI, without nomodeset, with nomodeset) it seems
like ATI driver behaves closer to expected: at least it allows to detect whem
monitor is connected
