Could be ... although both of these are gconf related, and gconf wasn't implicated in the stack trace.

Actually, I think it might. One of the things noticeable in both is that the call trace is incredibly deep. The default stack limit for users under opensuse is 8MB which might be getting overrun by such a deep trace (resulting in a random SEGV), particularly given the preference of gnome coders for automatic variables ... just to test this theory, I've upped mine to 16MB and am running it now.
