--- Comment #20 from Gerhard Mueller 2010-01-06 14:27:34 UTC ---
I now have found the reason for the strange behaviour of my PC system,
and I apologize very much that I took your time:
I can connect 2 screens to my graphics card. Normally I use the one attached to
the VGA connector. Since a few months I also have a second screen, attached to
the DVI connector. I used the second one very seldom, only for special
purposes, and it is normally switched off, but most of the time still attached
to the DVI connector.
I found out the following with openSUSE 11.1:
1. When the second screen is not attached to the DVI connector, all information
is displayed on the VGA screen, and everything works fine.
2. When the second screen is attached to DVI and switched on, the following
happens: During startup of the system, and also during the installation, all
information is displayed on both screens. When the system switches to the user
display, starting with the display to enter the password, only the DVI screen
shows the information, and the VGA screen shows the "colourful display" I
complained about.
3. Now you can guess what happens when the second screen is attached to DVI but
switched off.
This morning for some reason I had disconnected the DVI screen, therefore
everything worked as expected.
Probably the way how the Nvidia driver and the nv driver handle the case of 2
screens is different. And that caused my "problem".
So again: I apologize that I thought the change of the main memory size to be
the problem. I had not used my Linux systems on this PC since I added the
second screen, but immediately after changing the main memory I checked their
behaviour. Sorry!
Best redards, Gerhard Mueller
