[Bug 567509] New: Coloured screen insteadt of opening KDE desktop
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=567509 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=567509#c0 Summary: Coloured screen insteadt of opening KDE desktop Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: mail@gmusoft.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=334451) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=334451) hardware info produced by openSUSE 11.2 User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648; NET CLR 3.5.21022; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729) When I install openSUSE 11.2 from the downloaded DVD 32-Bit with KDE or run the openSUSE 11.2 Live-CD only a colourful screen display appears at the end with no chance to get any further. The installed openSUSE 11.2 2.6.31.5-0.1 has this problem, the failsafe - openSUSE 11.2 2.6.31.5-0.1 runs well. The same problem appeared with openSUSE 11.1 with KDE3 after I changed my main memory from 2x 256 MB to 2x 1 GB. The main board is ASUS A7N8X with 1GB, 1GB, - in the 3 memory slots. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Seems to be a problem with specific hardware, because openSUSE 11.1 with KDE3 ran well until I changed the main memory from 2x 256 MB to 2x 1 GB. Also with 11.1 the "normal" version fails while the "failsafe" version works well. Hardware details see attachment. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Probably because I was not used to how to handle the bug data base. But it is very annoying to just receive an error message like "You already used the form to file attachment 334684" or similar after trying hard to give information to the developers. It might be a good idea that Novell would amend their bugzilla code to accept and file the new information anyway. I tried to use an Nvidia proprietary driver to circumvent the problem, but I failed. This was not really straight-forward: I (not being an expert in linux installations) was not sure how to use the linux driver offered by the Nvidia website. I searched for nvidia in the software repositories which resulted in a long list without any usable information which one would be suitable. I selected one (nvidiagfx) and installed it. But the problem was still the same, see below. I would, of course, very much appreciate, if the proper Nvidia drivers would be included into the installation DVDs. Since, however, probably due to proprietary reasons this is not possible, I would propose to add some help information to the log file in case of a "not found" message, i.e. which driver from what source might be an appropriate one. >From the Xorg log files i conclude that 1. in the failsafe case, which works correctly, neither the nv driver nor the nvidia driver is loaded. (file S-var-log-Xorg.0.log-openSUSE-11.2-kde-failsafe.txt) 2. in the "normal" case, it is tried to load the nvidia driver for my graphic card, but driver nvidia is not found. (files S-var-log-Xorg.0.log-openSUSE-11.2-kde-normal.txt and S-var-log-Xorg.0.log-openSUSE-11.2-gnome-normal.txt) 3. After installing the package nvidiagfx the installation system complained that a kernel module needed for it was missing, and a GLX extension could not be initialized. (file S-var-log-Xorg.0.log-openSUSE-11.2-kde-withNvidiaDriver.txt) I had no chance to get any further here because I was lacking appropriate information that an expert would probably have. Could it be that in cases 2 and 3 there was no driver at all serving my screen? To clarify what a meant by "colourful screen" in my original problem description, I add a photo of what my screen showed in the case of kde "normal". With gnome the screen looks different. (file LinuxBildschirm-Bug567509-IMG6208-300.jpg) My be it helps to localize the problem. Kind regards and a happy new year to all linux developers! -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After installing the two packages you mentioned openSUSE 11.2 works fine also in "normal" mode.
Sounds better. :-)
After including the Nvidia repository and opening "software installation" the packages you mentioned were already selected by magic. Compliments to the developers!!! The Xorg.0 logfile tells me that the glx extensions are still not found, but that is no problem. I will solve it, if needed at all.
This doesn't sound good, since it is going to result in no 3D support at all. Could you attach your current /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
One note: Installing the packages resulted in 2 new entries in Grub. However, these do not run at all (I tried only the "normal" case). It seems they cannot locate the various disk partitions.
Strange. Maybe the installation of the nvidia packages triggered the installation of additional kernels and thus resulted in more grub entries.
For me the problem is solved. If you need any further information or would like me to test a new version of the nv driver in my exotic environment, please contact me.
I believe we should forget about nv driver here. But I suggest to test your memory. Install memtest86+ for that. It will create another boot entry. Running memtest takes a long time. Thus better run it over night. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
