After the crash, Alt+F2 to get a command window, then entering "plasma-desktop" starts the desktop manually, and the system is stable. Yes. That makes debugging slightly harder. ;-)
Could you also test above procedure with the launchers?
Confirmed, deleting the two default launchers (Dolphin and Firefox) did correct the plasma desktop shell crashes on login. I put two icons back via Kickoff by navigating to the application, right clicking, then selecting "Add to Panel". No crash with those in place. The two launchers I removed looked more like running task bars - they were rectangles that filled the empty space on the task bar. The two launch buttons that I added back are small widgets.
