I found the reason. The problem are the permissions of the nvram device in
/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules
Look for the line (line 60)
KERNEL=="nvram", GROUP="kmem", MODE="0600"
This allows the nvram device to be only accessed by root. I guess MODE="0640"
should be set at least, so that users in the group 'kmem' can access the
device. I don't know if there are any security concerns, but I would recommend
setting this line to:
KERNEL=="nvram", GROUP="users", MODE="0640"
or
KERNEL=="nvram", GROUP="users", MODE="0660"
This would allow all users to see the OSD while changing the volume. This would
also allow users to change some settings and buttons in KDE Control Center
(System Administration > IBM Thinkpad Laptop) which needs to access /dev/nvram
as well.
