After some time running with this issue it looks like it is between GDM and
Xorg.
Switching to GNOME on Wayland (Tumbleweed) makes the issue disappear (at the
cost of other instability issues in Wayland).
I realize the kernel is not crashed, just the display corrupt. If I undock, the
GDM screen appears again in the internal display, but it can't make it again to
the external monitors.
