I just wanna highlight what I wrote above. I USE this rt2860sta driver for more than HALF year in openSUSE 11.2 and without ANY hardlock or ANY problems. I also replaced OS 11.3 kernel from LiveCD with my own 100% working kernel from OS 11.2 and system hardlocked!!
Yes. Something has changed and nobody took care of the rt2860sta driver. I do not think it will help you too much to find out what it is because in the end you will have to fix the driver according to it anyway. Instead I suggest to compile the driver. The debug instructions for wlan can be found here [1] and here are the instructions to build the Ralink's driver [2].
