[Bug 619794] New: Hard lock/freeze on network activity via wifi
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=619794 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=619794#c0 Summary: Hard lock/freeze on network activity via wifi Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: RC 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mk_4@centrum.cz QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100626 SUSE/3.6.6-1.1 Firefox/3.6.6 I experience total system freeze after few moments of network activity via wifi - im using NetworkMananger, kernel driver rt2860. After connecting to my AP, freeze is only question of time. Strange is that pinging to any IP is working and wont cause freeze, but commands like zypper ref, ftp ftp://kernel.org, firefox lead to immediate freeze. Network via wired cable works with NO problems. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. start wifi via NetworkManager 2. any network activity (eg. zypper ref, ftp ftp://kernel.org, opening firefox) leads to crash CPU i7 860, 4GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 260 SOC, 2x 640gb in soft RAID0, my wifi is detected as "RT2760 Wireless 802.11n 1T/2R Cardbus". In my openSUSE 11.2 with custom compiled vanilla 2.6.34 wifi works WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS! -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you compile the driver ?
I just wanna highlight what I wrote above. I USE this rt2860sta driver for more than HALF year in openSUSE 11.2 and without ANY hardlock or ANY problems. I also replaced OS 11.3 kernel from LiveCD with my own 100% working kernel from OS 11.2 and system hardlocked!! I must assume that this issue isn't issue of kernel driver, rather than some component/s in OS11.3, maybe NetworkManager, supplicant or .... What do u think? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes. Something has changed and nobody took care of the rt2860sta driver. I do not think it will help you too much to find out what it is because in the end you will have to fix the driver according to it anyway. Instead I suggest to compile the driver. The debug instructions for wlan can be found here [1] and here are the instructions to build the Ralink's driver [2]. [1] http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Tracking_down_wireless_problems [2] Build Instructions: ==================== 1> $tar -xvzf DPB_RT2860_Linux_STA_x.x.x.x.tgz go to "./DPB_RT2860_Linux_STA_x.x.x.x" directory. 2> In Makefile set the "MODE = STA" in Makefile and chose the TARGET to Linux by set "TARGET = LINUX" define the linux kernel source include file path LINUX_SRC modify to meet your need. 3> In os/linux/config.mk define the GCC and LD of the target machine define the compiler flags CFLAGS modify to meet your need. ** Build for being controlled by NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant wext functions Please set 'HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y' and 'HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y'. => #>cd wpa_supplicant-x.x => #>./wpa_supplicant -Dwext -ira0 -c wpa_supplicant.conf -d ** Build for being controlled by WpaSupplicant with Ralink Driver Please set 'HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y' and 'HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=n'. => #>cd wpa_supplicant-0.5.7 => #>./wpa_supplicant -Dralink -ira0 -c wpa_supplicant.conf -d 4> $make # compile driver source code # To fix "error: too few arguments to function 241245iwe_stream_add_event" => $patch -i os/linux/sta_ioctl.c.patch os/linux/sta_ioctl.c 5> $cp RT2860STA.dat /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat 6> load driver #[kernel 2.4] # $/sbin/insmod rt2860sta.o # $/sbin/ifconfig ra0 inet YOUR_IP up #[kernel 2.6] # $/sbin/insmod rt2860sta.ko # $/sbin/ifconfig ra0 inet YOUR_IP up 7> unload driver $/sbin/ifconfig ra0 down $/sbin/rmmod rt2860sta -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

SUMMARY: I downloaded latest Ralink driver(ver 2.4; driver in vanilla kernel 2.6.34.1 is ver 2.1 !!!) from ralink webpage and compiled it under oS 11.2, then I copied whole kernel to oS 11.3 installation. Then I rebooted to oS 11.3 and wifi worked without HARDLOCK :)
I STRONGLY suggest u compile latest ralink driver, put it in main os 11.3 repository and publish this issue on official oS 11.3 webpages with guide how to install this driver via repository and WIRED connection. It would be very sad, if people say that oS 11.3 is bad because it freezes on wifi networking....
Sure. Thank you for testing. I leave this open until the KMP is ready. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've moved this bug to 11.4. The source from Ralink is GPL. I leave this open until the KMP is ready. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
