In that case root has to repair the system, e.g. reboot into single user mode. And it is a bug to remove the active system files in /var/log/ in the system directory /var/log/ its self. E.g. without lastlog it is impossible to trace a broken login. Ignoring a missing /var/log/lastlog is a security risk. Beside this you could try out the newest ghostscript-library and ghostscript-x11. Also I'd like to suppose to disable the anti-aliasing, some broken PDF file may use a redraw in the last font page command which makes the page white.
