The only issue that can arise is a heat issue but that affects the whole card and its cooling. It would equally be possible to overheat a card by massive 3D gaming as John has told us on freedesktop.org and this is even more probable. The card would display black before breaking. I do not believe that ATI and Nvidia cards behave much different. They may even use the same chiplet for the TMDS. The real issue behind Radeon developers not accepting the patch upstreams is that ATI wants to sell new UHD ready graphics cards. My question is: If we already have this patch for Nvidia cards why should we not have it for Radeon cards? Upstream NACKed it so we cannot accept it either. Sorry. I understand that it might be tempting to squeeze the most out of your card but even though it might work for you, someone else could get magic smoke. Also, by running outside of specs like this, the driver becomes tainted and we cannot accept bug reports from a tainted driver. The reason Nouveau have this module parameter is because they are unable to correctly determine what the _allowed_ clocks actually are. This is not the case for the Radeon driver.
