This is needed to fingerprint audio streams which don't have a sample rate of 44100 Hz. But to be clear: the situation is that we do not install phonon-backend-vlc by default (and never did), and there are also no recommends or supplements in place that would do that automatically (if you install vlc e.g.). People install it on their own on purpose and "break" their system while doing so. I still think we should do something to improve the situation though as mentioned, I just didn't find time yet to work on that.
