Both in case of installation media and final product. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual Results: The system freezes. Expected Results: Load/start of the kernel. Installation media: After choice of "Installation" option from boot menu of install media the kernel is loaded (progress bar reaches 100%), splash screen shortly shows and after blink of monitor the system freezes with disrupted splash screen. The same result obtained while using DVD and USB stick. The system freezes without writing anything into console while using text install. Tried to play with acpi=off, nolapic, manual=1 and some BIOS settings without effect. Installed system: I've tried openSUSE 11.4 on the same hardware and installation went without problems, so I have upgraded to 12.1 from installtion media using YaST. The result is the same as in previous case. When using kernel 2.6.37 from openSUSE 11.4 everything runs fine, so I think it is a matter of openSUSE 12.1's default kernel. My computer is Toshiba Satellite L300-11E. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Turn on computer (better with splash=verbose) and wait for messages. 2. The kernel messages are going well, but as soon as i915 is loaded the screen becomes black till xdm (kdm,...) appears. As a control experiment you may turn set e.g. "nomodeset", which prevents loading the i915 module. In this case you can see all systemd/sysinit messages. Actual Results: The screen turns black till *dm launches. Expected Results: Systemd/sysinit messages or a splash screen depending on the "splash" parameter. It has a reiserfs root, as necessary for the investigation. I installed it, then proceeded to update it. I updated some Samba packages including some libraries (libldb1, libsmbclient0, libwbclient0, libtevent0, libtdb1, libtalloc2) and therefore zypper ps claimed some old binaries had been in use. Therefore I decided to reboot the system. It seems as if the driver is trying to reset the GPU, but without any luck. The reset button is the only way to get the system up and running again. Related options: qemu-kvm [...] -virtfs local,path=/var/tmp/OhmStick/host,security_model=passthrough,mount_tag=host Mounted on guest with mount -t 9p -o rw,relatime,sync,dirsync,trans=virtio,version=9p2000.L host /host After that, files created on the host side with touch /var/tmp/OhmStick/host/bla show up. Those files can be changed on the guest side (e.g. edited with vi and saved). But no files/directories can be created on the guest side (running these commands as root): # mkdir /host/ttt cannot create directory /host/ttt: Permission denied I also tried setting /var/tmp/OhmStick/host to mode 777, the changed permissions are reflected, but still I get either Permission denied, Operation not permitted, or: # touch /host/ttt touch: Setting times of /host/ttt: No such file or directory This used to work fine, so that's a regression. I'm unsure how to find out whether the regression is on the kernel driver side or in qemu-kvm. There are no messages in the syslog, and qemu isn't exactly verbose either. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install qemu-kvm from Virtualization project, kvm package 2. Create /var/tmp/host directory 2. Boot into 12.1 image with qemu-kvm -virtfs local,path=/var/tmp/host,security_model=passthrough,mount_tag=host 3. Mount on guest(!) with mount t 9p -o rw,relatime,sync,dirsync,trans=virtio,version=9p2000.L host /host 4. Try to create file on guest(!): touch /host/ttt Actual Results: File creation fails: Permission denied. Independent on host directory permissions.
