This happens on the text console without X11 running, but later in the boot sequence also with X running. My monitor gets blank because it cannot display 45 Hz instead of 60 Hz. When in X11, a workaround is to increase the requested frequency to 80 Hz, resulting in 60 Hz being output. The problem does not occur on the VGA output. The problem probably does not occur on the LVDS output of my laptop, but I cannot tell the output frequency there. Grub boot menu is displayed, at 60 Hz 3. boot messages of initial ram disk appear at 60 Hz (splash turned off) 4. boot messages after initial ram disk appear at 45 Hz on DisplayPort output and probably normally on LVDS internal monitor 5. X11 login and session appear at 60 Hz on DisplayPort (while xorg.conf requests 80 Hz as my workaround), and probably normally on LVDS internal monitor 6. switching to text console gives same result as under 4. Actual Results: After initial ram disk, video frequency on DisplayPort output is only 3/4 of requested value. If I choose other screen resolution/frequency pairs in X11, it is also always 3/4 of the frequency requested in the mode line of xorg.conf. No problem occurs if I use the VGA output. No problem occurs with kernel parameter "nomodeset", but this switches off the hardware acceleration (which makes it inacceptably slow). Expected Results: The video output frequency should always be at its nominal value. With openSUSE 11.3, everything worked for me, including hardware acceleration, but I had switched off KMS using "nomodeset". Running openSUSE 12.2 Tumbleweed. Tried my usual trick of running vgaswitcheroo to turn off my second graphics card (hybrid graphics i915 + AMD Radeon HD 6400M), but it didn't work. This is the usual command: # echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch System Monitor plasma widget gives me a temperature reading that would normally indicate the AMD card has been switched off (-127.9DegC), but the fan is still going hard and my power usage is half what it should be - powertop says power consumption is 25W, usually 10-13W with AMD card off. Running # grep -i switcheroo /boot/config-* Gives me: CONFIG_VGA_SWITCHEROO=y So the kernel has been properly compiled with this option. Note that output of: # cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch 0:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:02.0 1:DIS: :Off:0000:01:00.0 Indicates that the Discrete (AMD) card is actually off, but this is not the case. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open terminal 2. Enter echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch Actual Results: Nothing happens. Even after it is restarted the graphics becomes laggy. Glxinfo reports that Xorg uses a back-off driver (Gallium with llvm pipe) instead of the specialized Intel driver. I've seen this problem several times during last week on two different machines (both with Intell GPU onboard). Put cable in and system settings asks if I want to use the second monitor. I want the same on the asus 1025ce. I bought a asus 1025ce for the long battery life. And it seemed to be good in playing 1080p-video. But the video-driver didn't recognize the hdmi output. And 1080p of 720p video is slow. In a few seconds lip-sync is lost with the images. Fn+F5 and Fn+F6 for brightness don't work either. With options acpi_osi=Linux and acpi_backlight=vendor I got it working. But now energy management can't control brightness. In dmesg I found that a gma500 driver is used - not a gma3650 driver. Still - I want to use HDMI output for my video and presentations. I found a simular bug report for a sony p115: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=774755 I'll attach a dmesg output for analysis. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. I had a look at /proc/acpi/video to had a look at the brightness information, but the only folders there are GFX0 and PEGP, none of them contains an LCD subfolder. :-( It seems that brightness information is stored in: * GFX0/DD01/brightness * GFX0/DD02/brightness * PEGP/DD01/brightness * PEGP/DD02/brightness Writing "50" into this files (for 50% brightness) does not change the brightness. Interesting detail: xbacklight now sais the brightness was 50% but its not. Setting the brightness directly with xbacklight also does not work. Xorg detects backlight controls: "(II) intel(0): found backlight control interface /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video1", but there is also a acpi_video0. I have written different values in the "brightness" file of both entries but nothing happened. I suspect this to be an issue of the switchable graphics or the BIOS: My notebook (HP Envy 14) comes with switchable graphics, see bugs 621522 and 619869.
