This behaviour has been observed for quite some time (>1 week), across all versions of Factory (with a daily "zypper up"). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Issue reboot (or poweroff) Actual Results: Shutdown sequence starts, e.g. network connections are terminated; then the machine does nothing. Expected Results: Conclude the shutdown sequence, then reboot (or switch off the power supply). I am very willing to help debug this. I've booted with systemd.log_level=debug systemd.log_target=syslog and attached /var/log/messages from the shutdown attempt, but I am at a loss as to what to look for. This leads to various problems. Sound test in YaST is working, but in KDE there is only a dummy device with no sound. User mounts of external drives or USB sticks in KDE give error messages. k3b doesn't recognize my cd-rw drive. During zypper dup a common-session.rpmnew is created. That file is missing the pam_systemd.so line. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. Run zypper dup to upgrade from 12.2 to 12.3 and use the common-session.rpmnew 2. Run "loginctl --no-pager list-sessions" 3. Run "loginctl --no-pager show-session -p Active $XDG_SESSION_ID" Actual Results: The actual session is neither listed nor active. Actually the $XDG_SESSION_ID isn't even defined. Expected Results: Sessions should be listed and be shown as "Active=yes". Sound should be working. k3b recognizes the cd-rw drive. Device mounts in KDE shall be possible. The attachment contains (among others) the file YaST2/config_diff_2013_03_14.log. That's the date of upgrading to 12.3. Component: SYSTEM-D - please ignore Bugzilla component, there is no appropriate one. Copied from an email thread in the opensuse(a)opensuse.org mail list (Subject: Re: [opensuse] On switching from runlevel 3 to 5, two partitions are umounted (by systemd??)) I boot this system in level 3, text mode with network. Some times I manually mount two encrypted partitions there, as root. Then I switch to runlevel 5, and log in. Eventually, I noticed that those two partitions were not mounted. I thought that perhaps I did not mount them. So this time I checked. I mounted them, and verified that the content was available. I then started level 5 (init 5). I typed ctrl-alt-f1, and listed the content of those partitions: not mounted. Not only that, but the "/dev/mapper/..." device had disappeared as well. This is 12.3.
