Preload therefore tries to load the complete vmdk files during bootup. As there is no manual page, no /usr/share/doc/packages/preload/README, no --help param, no config files, I consider the above behaviour a BUG. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Create some big files on the hard disk 2. Create an init script that reads small parts of these big files 3. After 8 minutes, I kill the preload process and the machine IO goes back to zero. Using that setup, there is no nfs entry in /etc/fstab. Now when I boot the system, the KDE login screen appears and if I immediately enter username and password, the home dir is not yet available and I get an error message from KDE. The problem is the /etc/init.d/earlyxdm script, which shows the login screen earlier than usual (autofs is S10, the same as earlyxdm, xdm itself is S11). The earlyxdm init script tries to prevent that from happening by checking for NFS mounted dirs in the check_nfs() function and doing nothing in that case (the KDE login manager will then be started after autofs and everything is fine). Now, the check in /etc/init.d/earlyxdm only looks for NFS mounts in fstab, not in autofs and doesn't detect the NFS mounted home dir that way, thus resulting in the problem. I don't know the best way to fix it, possibly take the safe route only look if autofs is enabled and disable earlyxdm then? After booting this system the interface gets the required local IPv4 and global IPv6 address, also a global IPv6 address is generated using the MAC address, which is allocated to the interface about 8 minutes later. At that moment no IPv6 address randomly generated is allocated. So the interface has 2 global IPv6 addresses allocated. After 1 day and about 7 hours, there have not been any change in the allocated IPv6 addresses, "ifdown eth0" and "ifup eth0" are given. At that moment within a few seconds both above global IPv6 addresses are allocated to the interface. At the same time a randomly generated global IPv6 address is allocated. So now the interface has 3 global IPv6 addresses. Using a website which displays the source IP address, first the IPv6 address generated using the MAC address is shown. I would prefer to see here the fixed IPv6 address. After having got the 3 global IPv6 addresses, this website shows the randomly generated IPv6 address. I would prefer to see here the fixed IPv6 address. After this each hour the randomly generated global IPv6 address is changed. Normally it works, but now I cannot switch. When I try to switch, entire system semi-freezes: * keyboard is not responding * mouse cursor is stuck However num-lock, caps-lock works so I figured out by that the keyboard layout is changed, and by that I figured it out I am in console (*) now, but I don't see it. To test it I press alt+F7 and system was back alive. My intended configuration was: one virtual display on two monitors: Laptop 1280x800 on the right, VGA monitor 1280x1024 on the left. I have the impression, that this is not bug 633044. When I tried to configure dual-monitor display using the Yast tool "krendrtray"="Bildschirmgröße und Ausrichtung ändern" (approx. "change display size and layout"), only cloning did work. When trying to get dual-head mode, it selected a low resolution of 1024 for both monitors, and ignored the correct "auto" modes. It also showed strange results when "identifying" the screens: it showed the names LVDS1 (laptop monitor) and VGA1 names on both monitors, and it seemed to be in clone mode instead. After searching the Opensuse support knowledge base, I found, that a different system is used for setup now. I found also an interesting Intel support page: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html and an older thread: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2 I tried to configure directly in a console window using xrandr (see below), and X11 crashed immediately. I read about a "Virtual" limitation in the xorg Screen section, and added a value large enough to contain the intended virtual screen : FROM FILE /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-screen.conf: Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Default Device" Monitor "Default Monitor" # ADDED THIS LINE BELOW: Virtual 2560 1024 EndSection However this did not help. ================================== THIS IS MY SOLUTION WHICH WORKS: * Switch off composite mode in "Systemeinstellungen / Arbeitsfläche /Arbeitsflächeneffekte" (something like "system configuration / working area / effects"). * Open a console window and configure the display manually using command "xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto --output VGA1 --auto --left-of LVDS1" instead of the graphical tool krandrtray. * Do not start krandrtray again: it leads to the VGA monitor returning to a blank screen, and krandrtray does not start correctly. If I use the above xrandr command again, the VGA monitor works again.
