Using that setup, there is no nfs entry in /etc/fstab. Now when I boot the system, the KDE login screen appears and if I immediately enter username and password, the home dir is not yet available and I get an error message from KDE. The problem is the /etc/init.d/earlyxdm script, which shows the login screen earlier than usual (autofs is S10, the same as earlyxdm, xdm itself is S11). The earlyxdm init script tries to prevent that from happening by checking for NFS mounted dirs in the check_nfs() function and doing nothing in that case (the KDE login manager will then be started after autofs and everything is fine). Now, the check in /etc/init.d/earlyxdm only looks for NFS mounts in fstab, not in autofs and doesn't detect the NFS mounted home dir that way, thus resulting in the problem. I don't know the best way to fix it, possibly take the safe route only look if autofs is enabled and disable earlyxdm then?
