This happens in opensuse-11.1 with an ASRock motherboard and onboard sis-660 gfx-card. I have found someone encountering the same problem here https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151934 so I copy his report here: "I can always start in the fail safe mode, but almost everytime I start KDE (or Gnome, come to that), the image on the monitor will freeze. Sometimes the computer behaves like it would still respond, but just cannot show any changes anymore. Sometimes the computer is really down and doesn't respond at all. According to this symptoms, I marvelled if the graphics card (SiS 660) is to blame, even though the installation by SuSE-Yast2 does recognize it. On the same computer it is almost impossible to start KDE with SuSE Linux 10.3, there where minor graphics problems with SuSE Linux 10.1 and it runs wonderfully with SuSE Linux 9.3." If there is another workaround than boot in failsafe mode? I haven't been able to reproduce on a non-live system. We moved our production system to our backup system and the issue followed it. I am able to reproduce this issue almost all the time on the production system if I do the following: 1. run a script that does mysql dumps of each database outputting them to text files. 2. watch the processlist in mysql and wait for ** DEAD ** process 3. check dmesg and look for Oops Actual Results: 1. the mysqldump script hangs - 2. a ** DEAD ** process is listed in the mysql processlist 3. and Oops is reported in the dmesg output Expected Results: 1. mysqldump should finish without incident. This started happening on 10/27/09 I've attached the my.cnf that was in effect when this starting happening (my.cnf_before). We have since tried different settings to optimize our system and see if we can fix this issue. A copy of the my.cnf that is currently in use is also attached (my.cnf_after) . We had not done any upgrades of the system OS or of mysql anytime in the months prior to this event. We have since applied system patches and run the DELL hardware diagnostics (all passes). If I select a theme intalled by the default installation, the theme in KDM remains the default, even after reboot. removing the suse branding and installing upstream kdm does not solve the problem. When I try to intall a downloaded and working theme, it ask again for root password and installs, but even if selected and applied (asking again for the root password), the theme remains the default (in this case the upstream branding). And when exiting the session, the default theme remains. But it waits for ~10 seconds before displaying it.
