This kernel bug (?) has been mentioned online a few times before and it appears to also affect the OpenSUSE kernel. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-laptop-and-netbook-25/fedora-… http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/kubutnu-9-04-freezes… My machine is using full disk encryption (all but /boot, courtesy of the installer's ability to encrypt the LVM setup) so the hang is persistent even before the passphrase for the system is requested. Pressing a key will get to the passphrase prompt and then holding down any key after it is entered for several seconds (ten to fifteen) is usually required to get the system to complete its boot process. Once running all is well. Adding the hpet=disable option to Grub completely resolves the issue. I have tried both x86_32 and x86_64 'desktop' kernels and seen this happen. Searching Novell's BugZilla I found perhaps twenty bugs referencing 'hpet' but none seemed to match this issue. Expected Results: Boot normally. Every time I try, the partitioning is messed up (sufficiently that cfdisk won't even open it up). How to replicate: use qemu-kvm and a new blank disk and do a minimal server install (console) with all of the defaults. I was installing onto an ext4 file system. Need to find out what that exit status means. Will get back to you with more hardware details. I ran a media check on my dvd and it came up error free. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Don't know if you can reproduce it - it didn't happen on any other of my 32bit installs. 2.Run a 32 bit 11.3 install and the problem will occur during the installation step. 3. Actual Results: If you ignore all the errors, you will get a system that won't boot because the boot loader wasn't installed. I think I know what is happening. Gpk-update-icon doesn't check for updates every day as asked to. Instead, I'm almost certain that it counts its own (cumulated) run time, and checks for updates every 24 hours of run time. This means that it works fine for a computer which is always up, but gpk-update-icon will only check for updates every 3 days if the user runs his/her computer 8 hours a day, and only every 24 days if the user runs his/her computer 1 hour a day. If I'm right, then the fix is to replace this run-time-based test by a time comparison between the current time and the time of the last update check. This should be pretty simple. When I play a DVD movie on the openSUSE 11.2 the movie will play but if I grab the window and move it the movie keeps playing but the window go black, if I grab the window again (may be more than once) I can get it back to where I can see the movie. If I boot into Ubuntu 9.10 and play the movie I can see it and grab the window and move it and all plays fine. I have Copmiz installed and running but not to many effects. Oh I also have VLC player installed. I have had problem with video under openSUSE 11.3 it will not see the card as being able to Compiz. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install doftware to be able to play DVD's. 2. Put in a DVD and start playing the movie. 3. Grab the window and move it (window will go black) grab the window again (may be more than once) and you will be able to see the movie playing. Expected Results: Be able to see the movie playing after you let go of the window. Just tried something and it fix the problem of the window going black when trying to move the window. I turned off the Desktop Effects and every thing work fine. The setting under Desktop effects is set to Medium. Just put the settings to Minimal and the same thing happens it only when it is turned off. I will attach hwinfo. Screen brightness is broken. The KDE power management widget in the taskbar has a screen brightness slider, which does not change the brightness. Likewise, the KDE power management settings should dim the screen when power is disconnected, but this also is broken. And worse, when I manually change the brightness with Fn+Arrow Right/Left, the brightness changes, but it results in a laggy, unresponsive system. In my most recent test, the mouse kept moving but I couldn't click on anything after changing the brightness this way. Basically the same problem exists on this system with openSUSE 11.3 too.
