This is due to the fact that the syslog daemon is started up after the network daemon. The syslog daemon is specified as being dependent on the network daemon. But this design is shortsighted and not necessary if logging can be done on the local file system and not on a networked drive. (probably the most likely scenario for most people!) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start up a system with network interfaces 2. Look for messages from the network daemon in the system messages log file 3. Actual Results: No log messages from the network daemon are reported. Expected Results: I expect to see messages informing me as to whether the network daemon successfully started up, and what interfaces were initialized.. I suggest breaking the syslog daemon into two parts, one for logging on the local file system, and a later more expanded version that can handle logging to a networked device. Then start the first syslog daemon right after the local filesystem is initialized. It just starts an ncurses/textmode installer instead. The VNC server isn't started until the 2nd stage of the install (after packages have already been installed) PLATFORM/CONFIGURATION: 11.2 Final i586 REPRO: 1. Boot from the openSUSE 11.2 DVD 2. In the boot parameters, add vnc=1 3. Start the install RESULTS: After prompting for a password, a textmode installer is displayed. Attempting to view the X Display Configuration panel in nvidia-settings from 195 for instance under the 173 or 96 series drivers gives an error like so: Unable to load X Server Display Configuration page: Failed to query NoScanout for screen 0. This is due to the property not existing on the older drivers. Perhaps it would be a good idea to package seperate nvidia-settings-VERSION packages to get around it? Upstream blob drivers package their own nvidia-settings tailored to that driver release and they work properly. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Run nvidia-settings 2. Click on X Server Display Configuration Actual Results: Unable to load X Server Display Configuration page: Failed to query NoScanout for screen 0. Expected Results: Show the configuration screen. I extracted the binary from the Ubuntu deb and ran it.
