My hardware: Acer Extensa 5630Z laptop, Atheros AR9280 half mini-PCI card wireless A/B/G/N, connected through A or G. I use WPA/PSK encryption. Problem: With Atheros AR9280 the wireless network connection drops often. It's restored in up to 10 seconds. My findings: 1) I don't have these problems with openSUSE 11.1 (also GNOME, x86_64), dual booted on same laptop. 2) It occurs both on 2.4 (802.11g) and 5.8 (802.11a) GHz. I tried several settings in kmix, with and without capturing and mic and front mic boost, no chance. Primarily I intend to use the mic from a headphone with Skype 2.1, but even for instance KDE3 krecord did not detect any signal level. I don't have installed or activated PulseAudio I ended up with choosing the driver model "3stack" explicitely from the YaST Sound module. This gives me at least krecord to detect a significant signal level change on speaking into the front mic, but I can't for instance still hear myself although I unmute all output channels in kmix and Skype doesn't still work and hangs up now after trying a call. The BIOS settings don't offer many possibilities with sound settings, there is only a switch whether to use Intel HDA Audio or not. It seems to hang during udev initialization. I noticed that there is netconsole support in initrd, but the documentation for it is not adequate. The boot script refers to a NETCONSOLE variable, but I have no idea where to set it. I found a bug mentioning /etc/sysconfig/kernel, but it doesn't actually seem to read it from there. So instead, I have attached a series of images containing the scrollback buffer, including overlap. SysRq keys do work after the hang, so if you want some of that information, let me know.
