During the installation of packages, the installer stops when installing grub-0.97-161.2.i586.rpm. There is no error message, it looks like the installation of this package takes forever and actually never finishes. In the background, grub uses 100% CPU. Logs follow. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. boot autoyast with the attached install.xml 2. 3. Actual Results: The installer never finishes the installation of the grub package and runs forever. Expected Results: The installer should complete the installation of the grub package and go on with the installation. After the first reboot, GRUB only writes: "GRUB Loading Stage1.5" "GRUB loading..." and after a second, the machine restarts, which results in an infinite loop. No menu is shown and the machine is unusable unless booting from DVD or USB. Hardware: ThinkPad T42 I had to repair the machine using openSUSE 11.1 DVD. Strangely reinstalling GRUB with default options from the repair tool did not resolve the problem. In the second attempt "Bootloader location" was set to all "MBR", "Root partition" and "Extended partition". Only after that GRUB started properly. To be more specific it seems like zypper retrieves packages twice, for example: Retrieving package libsidplay1-1.36.59-137.2.i586 (2/32), 77.0 KiB (263.0 KiB unpacked) Retrieving: libsidplay1-1.36.59-137.2.i586.rpm [done] and tehn when it comes to installing (i presume) it goes again with "retrieving" : Retrieving package libsidplay1-1.36.59-137.2.i586 (34/32), 77.0 KiB (263.0 KiB unpacked) Installing: libsidplay1-1.36.59-137.2 [done] would be more then enough to retrieve "once" and install later. I do realize that package is being downloaded once, it's just it seems like zypper getting it three times before installing it. Therefore yast2-scanner should show this information to the user so that the user knows in advance whether or not he could expect some help if the driver does not work. The only question is regarding usability: When a driver is "unmaintained", it does not mean that this driver does not work at all. Even an unmaintained driver could work perfectly well. It only means that there is no longer anybody who knows about the internal details of the driver so that there is no help at all for a user who has issues with an unmaintained driver. The question is whether this information requires a popup warning message to alert the user or if it is sufficient to just show it as additional text in the entries of the selection list of scanner models. Specifically, a user wanted to try out WebYaST on 11.2. I took the 11.2 KDE live CD I added these repositories: zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/YaST:/Web/openSUSE_11.2 webyast zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/devel:/languages:/ruby:/extension… rubyext zypper ref # and accepted the keys Installed the basic WebYaST package: zypper in lighttpd # a regular non-updated version zypper in yast2-webservice Now I got this, because indeed the updated lighttpd was not available (If you test this later, disable updates) Problem: nothing provides lighttpd > 1.4.20-3.6 needed by yast2-webservice-0.0.19-1.1.noarch Solution 1: deinstallation of yast2-webservice-0.0.19-1.1.noarch Solution 2: break yast2-webservice by ignoring some of its dependencies I chose 2 and assumed only the lighttpd dependency would be ignored. But in addition, the "rubygem-rails-2_3 = 2.3.4" dependency was ignored too. The wording "some of its deps" suggest this may be a "feature". But even zypper verify does not mention the rails dep afterwards.
