I notice the following line of code pFileHandle = fopen((const char *)pFileName, "rb"); but no matching call to fclose. This looks like a resource leak to me. Some gnome package installed as a dependency must have caused this which would be a serious problem for somebody who wasn't experienced enough to escape from this problem. After applying the patch from bug 523746 on 11.1 the script /lib/mkinitrd/scripts/setup-kpartx.sh still has problems with such a setup. I'm not sure how the fix should look like in this case.
