This should be an enhancement request, but became critical due to other problems. Current boot manager situation: - yaboot is installed as bootmanager on Pegasos, but works only with recent firmwares, the rest need a workaround - EFIKA: no bootmanager is installed The mentioned workaround is to boot inst32 again, then boot the installed system, finish installation, login as root, and create a bootable kernel image. Obviously this is not a user friendly solution, especially that typical users of these machines are desktop users (mostly from the Amiga world). Even this workaround is lost now with recent factory releases, booting the installed system from inst32 does not work any more ( see: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=373569 ) The proposed solution is to run the following command during installation to get a bootable kernel image. chroot /mnt mkzimage --initrd /boot/initrd --vmlinux \ /boot/vmlinux --output /boot/zImage This should be on one line, broke only for bugzilla readibility. 'chroot' is needed, as only the installed system has the 'mkzimage' tool (part of the PPC version of the 'lilo' package). In yast, the kde package versions are all 4.0.99-15.2. I encountered some problems w/ openoffice 2.4.1 (taskbar flickering, extra carriage return when copying from OOo to other apps), so I installed the beta version of OOo 3, again from the opensuse repo. Yast versions: 2.99.25-12.1. This introduced some severe problems. One is that accessing certain menu items freezes the entire KDE session! Nothing I do in the GUI then works. I then have to start a text console (ctrl-alt-f1), login as root, and issue reboot. The menu items this happens with are: open, save as, export. I got the problem with at least one of these in writer, calc, and impress. Needless to say, given how long it takes to perform one test and reboot, I'm not in the mood to explore this systematically. The reason is that mpi-selector is used, which allows multiple MPI installations. Expected: (a) When an MPI-Package is installed, the post installation script checks whether already an MPI packages is registered (mpi-selector --query); if not, it registers itself. (b) If an MPI package is uninstalled, it removes itself; it would be great that then automatically the next MPI package (if enabled) would be selected. I work in an xterm and insert a CD-ROM. It takes some time until the medium is accessible, so I continue working in the xterm. Then (when in openSUSE), I can 3)activate the "Leave" menu and it will give me the choices a)openeSUSE and b)Ubuntu(current). But I think there is something funny here because it thinks that Ubuntu is the current OS.
