However, i encountered one problem: If i close the lid (or press the lid switch manually), the machine hangs hard. No magic sysrq possible, nothing. Switching to the i810 driver makes this work fine. Also, if i switch to a text console before closing the lid, the machine also does not hang. Egbert should be able to reproduce this easily, since he has exactly the same machine. I can also provide a spare nx5000 for reproducing / fixing the bug. I updated the BIOS to the latest version F.0D (from F.05) today and it did not change anyhting. As a result power management functions are not accessible from KDE. Also, KDE cannot mount media. The problem disappears after manually starting ConsoleKit (which by then is reportedly 'unused') and logging again. It look as if: 1. dbus is starting. Its script finishes execution, but /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket is not yet available. 2. ConsoleKit is started and tries to connect to the above-mentioned socket. It fails and reports a warning in syslog. 3. The socket becomes available. 4. The boot continues. On my Core Duo laptop the bug can be reproduced by: 1. Ensuring parallel startup script execution is enabled (seems to be the default.) 2. Booting the system. 3. Right-click kde power management applet and see that no power management functions are available. Try to mount a media (cdrom, e.g.) and get error about access denied by policy. The problem is gone after one of the following: 1. Modifying /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf and allowing a certain user to do everything with <match user="id"><return result="yes"/></match>. Apparently PolicyKit considers a user inactive despite logging in. Clearly a ConsoleKit problem? 2. Disable parallel execution of startup scripts. 3. Modifying /etc/init.d/consolekit to include something like: while [ ! -S /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket ] do sleep 1 done before starting consolekit. The keys fn+F6 and fn+f7 change the brightness correctly. But if I hibernate my laptop and then restart it the brightness if set to be full and I can not change it neither using fn+F6 and fn+f7 nor using the powersave applet. This updates GRUB properly and does not remove the previously functioning kernel but does properly install the newest kernel and upon reboot if the kernel doesn't have major issues, the system boots just fine. If there are issues, then I reset and select the old kernel from the GRUB menu and the old kernel boots as it always used to. This is the desired installation and should be the default and until it is the default, I will have to do the installation manually. The bug is indicated by the attached screen shot. The updater insists on showing forever that there is an update that needs to be installed that I have to be careful to unselect or it will undo everything I have done to keep my old kernel intact as a backup. It will reinstall the new kernel, erase my backup, prevent the option to boot that backup in case I discover that the new kernel does have bad characteristics that make it undesirable to continue to be used such as loss of sound or other things that don't prevent booting but interfere with functions that worked under the older kernel but don't work or work poorly in the newer one. I do NOT want to install the kernel using the updater once I have installed it manually because of its anti-social behavior with regard to alternative kernels. The screen shot shows rpm -qa kernel* decidedly shows the kernel that the updater insists on installing as an 'option' is already installed. If I don't notice this, I undo my efforts. A crptic error message is displayed instead of asking the user to insert the install DVD.
