The symptom is that the boot script times out when waiting for /dev/mapper/cr_md1 to become available. There is no password prompt where one could enter the LUKS passphrase. The reason for the failure is that the scripts config/luks.sh and run_all.sh try to access the soft RAID partition by something like '/dev/disk/by-id/md-name-X' instead of a plain '/dev/mdX.' This alias, however, has not yet been created at that time of the boot process. When digging a bit in the /lib/mkinitrd scripts, the culprit is easily found: /lib/mkinitrd/scripts/setup-luks.sh tries to beatify the block device that the LUKS partition resides on in this line: eval luks_${luks_name}=$(beautify_blockdev ${luksbd}) Doing away with the beautify_blockdev() call fixes the problem. After removing it the scripts in the initrd contain /dev/mdX and the system boots OK. To reproduce: run "abiword" command, AbiWord window opens. Select in the menu Tools -> Scripts, script selection dialog opens. In the script selection dialog select a file, it does not matter if the file is a Perl script or whatever, the program will die anyway. In the same dialog select "Perl Scripts (.perl, .pl)" in the file type pulldown list. Click OK button. The program will die with the following messages printed to the stdout: Can't locate AbiWord.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i586-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/i586-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/i586-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl .). BEGIN failed--compilation aborted. terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc' what(): std::bad_alloc IOT trap The bug seems to be twofold: 1) Build problem - the abiword package fails to install the AbiWord.pm Perl module which is required for running Perl scripts by AbiWord. 2) Some AbiWord problem which makes it die.
