In the boot menu, I selected German language. The GUI-installer correctly preselected the German keyboard layout so I just clicked "Next", but the layout did not change. The shell (CTRL+ALT+F2) on the other hand did have the correct keyboard layout. However, when I start kooka the scanner is not detected. On the shell I can see this: $ kooka libusb couldn't open USB device /dev/bus/usb/001/005: Permission denied. libusb requires write access to USB device nodes. But Thunderbird 2.0.x still uses myspell by default which results in incompatibilities and wrong spell check results with the Hunspell dictionaries.
