When I remove any other alias, then only this alias I want to remove will be removed, without touching the other aliases. example: creating the aliases: ifconfig eth0 10.10.10.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 up ifconfig eth0:2 10.10.0.18 netmask 255.255.255.0 up ifconfig eth0:3 10.10.0.19 netmask 255.255.255.0 up ifconfig eth0:1 10.10.0.20 netmask 255.255.255.0 up ifconfig eth0:0 10.10.0.17 netmask 255.255.255.0 up ifconfig eth0:4 10.10.0.16 netmask 255.255.255.0 up when I then want to remove alias e.g. eth0:1, without affecting the other aliases, then there is no problem, when issuing command: ifconfig eth0:1 down then only this alias is gone. But when I want to remove the first created alias this way: ifconfig eth0:2 down then all aliases are gone. This is the same in opensuse 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 and SLESsp1. My system has a non bootable USB hard drive that I installed openSuse to and access with INSTLUX. I can't upgrade the kernel because Instlux is kernel dependent and ugrading makes the system non accessible. In attempting to use a CDROM I have been experimenting with Grub. I always end up at the Grub prompt with my boot cdrom attempts. Since the grub came off of the CDROM where I put my INITRD and kernel I figured that it would work if I pursued trying to configure. At the grub prompt you can put in "root (hd" and hit the Tab key which is supposed to give options of what can be seen. Well it only gives (hd0,0). I couldn't use CD at all as described in your documentation. It wouldn't recognize the CD at all even though that is where the grub was located. In another place it stated that grub recogizes hd and fd only. I am at a very low level of computer understanding but when I posted this concern on another group concerning some attempts I was making with freedos someone came back to me that his search showed that grub doesn't recognize the CD. I just want to be able to boot from a CDROM. Is your documentation right or is it impossible for grub to recognize the CDROM for booting. There are 2 Windows XP systems on the primary partition of each hard disk (hda1 and hdb1), and openSUSE 10.2 on hdb5. After using grub without any problems, I had to re-install the Windows XP on hda1 (I re-formatted the partition from NTFS to FAT). After that, I used a Suse 9.1 Install CD to re-install grub into the MBR. This worked fine, I can start Windows on hda1 and Linux. But I cannot start Windows on hdb1 anymore (which is still NTFS). It appears that Vista requires that it's system partition be marked active (boot). This creates an unusable situation because openSUSE also requires that it's system partition be marked active. Since only one partition may be marked active Vista cannot be used. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that using the makeactive flag in grub when chainloading will cause only Vista to be bootable if even that. In my own case Vista became unbootable every time grub was used to attempt to boot it. Some modification was made to the partition table which was correctable by using the repair function of the Vista install disk. For myself I have managed to remedy the situation by installing an MBR which allows me to choose which partition's bootloader to run, but the situation needs to be solved somehow generally. It may be that the recommendation to leave the MBR untouched is a bad one for this case. Since the memory is copied over it appears to have work until you use it.
