Both machines are connected via a gigabit switch. In /var/log/messages "Detected TX Unit Hang Messages" are printed if the problem happens. I'm using a Intel 82541PI Gigabit Ethernet Controller. It is plugged into a ASRock K7VT4APro board. Kernel is 2.6.22.13-0.3-default The following link seams to describe the problem.
