I know dynamic should do a good job at it, but more than often it doesn't (at least for me - my laptop has ACPI issues I believe). It'd be nice to have some "expert" options to select performance or powersave or dynamic, via the tray icon or something. The screen goes blank, an error message is generated, and then it just halts. The disk I have is from Linux User and Developer magazine, DVD format, and says openSUSE 10.1. My system is an older HP 455MHz celeron with 256MB of memory. The video is the ATI RagePro with 8M. It is currently running Redhat 3.2.2-5 (last Redhat release prior to fedora) with no problem. The system model number is Pavillion 6475Z. The HP website says the card can be upgraded, would that help? Or is there an alternate installation methoc? Now after a number of reboots, it stops working, ie no start-up sound in KDE and no sound gets played when playing wav sounds through Xine. I then found that the Yast sound configuration module does not reliable re-enable it. I usually have to use alsaconf to re-enable it which works most times although not always, either. The installer had turned off my network card immediately before the network connectivity check. After manually turning on the network interface, performing the check successfully, the system turned off my network interface again before letting me login to the final installed system. It seems odd to turn off the interface even if the user manually turned it on a minute or two earlier. After downloading package listings, selections, (packages too?), the installer wanted to test network connectivity and download release notes. This step failed because my network interface had been brought down shortly before the network interface test. I was able to pass the network test simply by running 'ifup eth0' in another virtual console. I upgraded my SLED10 system to OS10.2, and wanted to replace the 10.1 repositories I had configured with the 10.2 versions. In the zypper shell, I removed one, asked for a service list, removed another one, asked for a service list, and found that zypper had removed unrelated repositories. Sorry for no cut-n-paste, it's on a machine without easy network access. (Incidently, I'd like a way to abort the shell without making these kinds of changes permanent. It'd have been nice to be able to bail out after noticing the errors..)
