[Announcement] Installable CD for 9.0/AMD64 ready
I'm glad to announce that we have made a bootable CD with a new kernel that supports various SATA drivers. This should help everybody with an AMD64 system with SATA harddisks to install the 9.0/AMD64 DVD on such a system. We have done some tests on those systems that we have access and are finally happy with the results since all these systems are supported;-). The kernel contains some extra patches which were not in the I'll make also an optional kernel update via YOU available the next days for those that are interested in just the kernel. Download from a mirror of ftp.suse.com. The ISO is /pub/suse/x86_64/supplementary/9.0-PatchCD/9.0-PatchCD.iso The kernel RPMs are in a subdirectory on the server if you're just interested in those. If you encounter problems, please discuss it on this mailing list. Andreas P.S. The VIA and most other SATA RAID controllers are really software RAID. Linux doesn't usually support the format used by the Windows driver, but you can run the normal linux software MD RAID which works just fine. The few real SATA RAID controllers like 3ware are supported. -Andi
Fantastic, that's what I've been waiting to here, I guess my choice of buying the SUSE version of Linux was the right one. After unsuccessful efforts of installing my SuSE 9.0 for Athlon64 on my Shuttle SN85G4 with only one SATA disk I decided to take that *nix system that will be first to support my SATA controller (Silicon Image 3512). The *BSD variants seemed to be on a good way but none of them finally recognized the controller. And now I see why I originally decided to buy that SuSE DVD :-) After downloading the new ISO, burning it and booting from it the installation of the standard system finally succeeded :-D Thank you very much for your efforts in providing this solution. Sound is working, too, the next thing I have to look for is getting the built-in network card to work ("NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Controller" according to Windows XP). I probably will have to put a cheap PCI network card into the system until the NVIDIA Controller will be supported. I've got the same machine, but did not even try to go with SATA... Anyway, NVidia's nforce driver for AMD64 works well with 2.4.x kernels.
9600XT graphics card, yet, but it's not that important to me for now :-)

There is a "forcedeth" driver for it available, but it's not yet included on the CD, as far as I know. You can try googling a bit.
forcedeth doesn't really work well on nforce3 right now, only on nforce2. On nforce3 the wrong interrupt handling seems to hurt too much, causing interrupt storms. Nvidia has a beta binary only 64bit driver for download though. I haven't tried it so I don't know if it will work. -Andi

Confirmed: I didn't try the forcedeth driver but downloaded NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0269.src.rpm from the NVIDIA website and compiled it according to the release notes and the onboard network controller is working finally :) In the change list of the current driver release is noted:
Added support for nForce3 platforms Added support for x86-64 architecture So I think the 64bit-support is not in beta state any more?

Thanks a lot for that patch CD. I downloaded it on friday and together with a beta BIOS release I received today I really see a tremendous advance in 3D graphics performance on our Celsius V810 workstation. This week I'm going to prepare a Celsius V810 to send to SuSE for hardware certification. I just want to see if Tyan gets the final issue in the BIOS fixed so that we can see the AGP tunnel without playing around with bootprompt parameters. I somehow managed to install it again. It seem, my DVD-ROM has some problems with DVD. On newly installed system, when running update there is strange Product name Product: SuSE Linux PatchCD Version: 9.0
When I try to make update, then it writes some directory, which is named SuseLinux Patch CD and cannot update.
Where is this data about PatchCD stored? Could it be somehow changed?

All, I've applied the rpm for the new patched 2.4.22-193 kernel from the suse.com and the promise SATA controller works fine if I insmod the appropriate module. Is there a way that I can get this to load automatically at boot? A couple of questions: 1. Can the Patch CD be used to install off an FTP server? 2. Can the Patch CD be used to install a 32-bit SuSE 9.0 system? If you can make the iso look correct I'd think so. I've got no idea how to do that.

My experience so far is that it will *not* work. I've got one serial and one parallel drive - I'm going to make the serial an XP (blech!!) and the parallel Suse. I've tried for 2 weeks now to make some form of linux work off the serial drive, but no luck. Mandrake will boot off the SATA, but it won't run PPP. Suse should run PPP ok, but it won't install to the SATA. Stick to parallel for now and save yourself a lot of grief! Patience, persistence, truth, Dr. mike
