When 7.1 first came out, there were many messages in suse-linux-e complaining about the cost of the Professional version and I think it is worth every penny I spent on it. I got mine from http://www.chumbo.com and it cost $61.49 + $4.95 for shipping by FedEx and I received it in two days. They have it in stock. SuSE did a fantastic job putting it together and I can't wait to install it tomorrow. All you linux users complaining about the free ISO image not being on the SuSE site should break down and support SuSE by purchasing a version. jozien
I also think it was worth the price. I recieved mine from a work associate who just returned from Germany, and even with our sick exchange rate out here the price is not too damaging (less than half the cost of winME). For me the install was great! just my 2c. :) On Friday 09 March 2001 05:24, you wrote:

just my 2c. Actually, the exchange rate is pretty favorable with most of Europe right now! I'm comparing with about 10~12 years ago, when the dollar would only buy DM 1.60, or about It. Lira 1200.
Go to http://www.oanda.com/converter/classic and check out the current prices. Oh, sorry, I didn't realize you were in .za. . . . I'm not familiar with that.

I could not agree more. For all you get, that price is a bargain. And if people want to see Linux continue to grow, the least they can do is buy the retail version. Like you, I just bought 7.1 from Chumbo, and I am greatly looking forward to getting it running. ****************************************** Powered by Caldera OpenLinux eDesktop 2.4 & KMail 1.0.28 Bryan S. Bryan, I fully agree with this. I can honestly say 7.1 has been a bumpy ride for me. Lots of things have not gone quite as I would have liked. Then again, this is the first distribution I have every actually tried to take a systematic approach with. The combination of my having a better idea of what I want my systems to do, having more working components which I depend on regularly, and SuSE 7.1 having been significantly rearranged has led to a lot more frustrations than I have had with previous distributions. I have also been much harder on SuSE this time around. If we are going to take on the ring wraiths if Redmond we can't let up on the demand for perfection. I'm willing to put in a lot of my own time and effort do make Linux better, and SuSE Linux in particular. I do wish there were a more systematic approach to learing how to work with the nuts and bolts of the product. I buy this distribution, and I think people who have the bucks should do the same. If we stop and think about how much we pay for the hardware, the price of the SuSE distribution is miniscule. If people think it's over priced, they should go out to kernel.org, fetch the source, compile it, and start adding things until they have a working system. Then they can b!tch with impunity. But I do wish my XEmacs would compile {:-/> @#$%^$!!! Steve

Good point, for example in 7.0 during boot I get this error message, "Perhaps USB is disabled in BIOS." USB is in fact enabled and works great in Win98! So for the time being I cannot use the USB support I was looking forward to in 7.0. I am willing to tolerate this because I am pro-Linux and pro-SuSE, and because I did not have any critical USB items that needed to be connected to this machine. Other potential "converts" from the Windows world, your average mainstream users, might not be so forgiving. Still, like you, I feel I got an awesome deal on this distribution. Now I have 7.1 in my house, waiting to be installed as soon as I have time. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional KMail 1.0.29.2 Bryan S. Well, the USB support was backported from 2.4.X..it's ok in the 2.2 kernel..try the 2.4.X kernel..the improvement is noticable. :) * Bryan S.
