[opensuse] zypper 'dup' & 've' disagree; zypper keeps wanting to deinstall Dolphin ?
I'm working on an Opensuse 13.2, getting next-gen KDE (plasma5 + KF5 + etc) up & running. After installing/upgrading the needed changes, zypper tells me zypper dup ... Nothing to do. But when I verify with zypper zypper ve Loading repository data... It seems like it's packaging, but I don't know why zypper's unhappy with this? Don't use zypper dup on a stable release, period. That's a good way to break your system... - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Carlos, why not? Only just yesterday I upgraded a 13.1 to 13.2 using zypper dup, it works very well. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (21.1°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You used it for what it was made for. From the zypper man page: dist-upgrade (dup) [options] Perform a distribution upgrade. This command applies the state of (specified) repositories onto the system; upgrades (or even downgrades) installed packages to versions found in repositories, removes packages that are no longer in the repositories and pose a dependency problem for the upgrade, handles package splits and renames, etc. That's not the same thing as what Robert was apparently trying to do. Dist-upgrade, without any switches, means openSUSE (e.g. 13.2 to TW or 13.1 to 13.2), not KDE4 to KDE5. He should have used dup with the -r switch for whatever the KDE5 BS repo is to get the newer Plasma, but then gone back to using only up or patch unless on some other BS repo or switching to TW. On most of my own installations I've locked breeze* and kde-oxygen-fonts in order to prevent escape from KDE4. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." What does checking the output 'zypper dup' have to do with 'zypper ve' telling me I should either deinstall/break the package? I diidn't exec 'zypper dup' for the upgrade, I'm checking with it like I was told to do. 'zypper ve' reports a problem. Why is that problem being reported, and what do you do to FIX it? I notice 'zypper ve' reports about "Dolphin-.noarch". I've looked online and there's no references I can find with that name WITH the hyphen in it. Lots of references to just "Dolphin.noardch", NO hyphen, but still no asnwer to why it thinks it needs to unininstall/break it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Who told you to use 'zypper dup'? What was the reason/explanation?
'zypper ve' reports a problem. Why is that problem being reported, and what do you do to FIX it?
I can think of a number of reasons why, the most obvious being that you have an inconsistency and an update OR a de-install would remove that inconsistency. A RTFM makes it very clear: <quote> verify (ve) [options] Check whether dependencies of installed packages are satisfied. In case that any dependency problems are found, zypper suggests packages to install or remove to fix them. </quote> Supposing you want to retain the package, I would suggest that you do a zypper up Only use 'dup' if a) you are using evergreen and the 'three repositories' setup b) you are doing an upgrade of the OS version (e.g. 13.1 to 13.2 and following the instructions about editing your respositires etc according to the Wiki page. -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The explanation was to CHECK with 'zypper dup', NOT to exec an upgrade with it. Which is waht I did.

So you're suggesting I should REMOVE Dolphin? Since 'zypper up' reports Nothing to do. too, that's the only other option. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You did not clarify that. you said that you did an update, then you said that you were using "zypper dup". The obvious conclusion is that you used zypper dup to do the update. And still you do not give a link to who or where told you do do a zypper dup, and for what.
So you're suggesting I should REMOVE Dolphin?
No. But we do not have the complete picture. You could, for instance, explain what you have done, exactly, and what is it you want to achieve. And then post the result of "zypper lr --details". - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Because you are doing a distribution upgrade, from 13.1 to 13.2. That's what "zypper dup" is designed for. It is not designed for maintenance updates. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
