[opensuse] K3b doesn't recognize disc
Hi, I spent some time last evening working on trying to get k3b to recognize a disc in the disc drive without success. I also tried to use Brassero to burn the disc, but it also has the same problem. Neither program recognizes that there is a disc in the drive. The disc is recognized by kde. I am using openSuse 12.3 with kde 4.10.2 release 1. The k3b version is 2.0.2-15.44-x86_64. The repository where the k3b version comes from is http://packman.links2linux.de, however I recently changed the packman repository to http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_12.3 But I don't think the change of repository has anything to do with the problem. I followed through this bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=812462 and found that my /etc/pam.d/common-session and /etc/pam.d/common-session-pc files seem to be configured correctly. I also followed through this thread http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/multimedia/442519... but didn't find anything useful to resolve the problem. I will need some help to get this problem fixed. Thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

As last test. If it is possible try to attach an external DVD/CD Burner unit and check if disck is recognized. If recognized most probably your original DVD/CD hardware unit has a physical failure (e.g. broken cables, lens, etc...). In that case change the unit and problem will go. Hi, I found the answer to the problem in an old post on the forum for opensuse 11.1. The fix for the problem is to go to Yast> Security&Users> User and Group management> Edit User> and add "disk" and "cd-rom" groups. After doing this k3b recognized a disk and was able to burn information to the disk. Remove user from "disk" group. It makes possible for normal user to write whatever it wants to any of your disk devices (/dev/sdaX) bypassing regular file system. ~> ll /dev/sda brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 0 May 29 18:31 /dev/sda ^^^^ Disk /dev/sda belongs to group disk, so right now you have the same right as root. Imagine some sound source writing directly to your disk. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, I thought I got it working, but it is only working half-way. It reads one DVD writer, but not the other installed DVD writer. I can burn on one writer but not on the other one, as k3b still doesn't recognize it. Anyone have any ideas about how to fix this? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Mark, You were very specific about your software versions and you at least listed the troubleshooting steps you've taken ... which is extremely helpful ... but you were not very informative with respect to: 1. the type of media that is failing (make/brand & type of disc) 2. the affected drive make, model & firmware version 3. error messages (i.e. launch k3b via cli; also check logs) Also, your descriptions of the symptoms are a little confusing: You wrote "... trying to get k3b to recognize a disc in the disc drive without success... also tried Brassero ... but ... same problem. Neither program recognizes that there is a disc in the drive" At first glance, the problem you're describing is unrecognized media. Recognizing media is usually an internal function of the drive. k3b and Brassero merely convey (report) such failures. Then you write "There is no problem with the burner hardware ... using PCLinuxOS ... k3b recognizes the disc and is able to burn. ... also works in Win7 ..." And finally, (from above) "... it is only working half-way. ... It reads one DVD writer, but not the other installed DVD writer."" Please clarify what you mean by "it" :-) There's a lot of context switching happening in your writing here. Assuming "It" here means k3b, you seem to be saying that the attached external drive works fine with the otherwise unrecognized discs (media) while those same discs are not being recognized by the internal drive. (Again, this seems to be describing an 'unrecognized media' problem. Maybe the internal drive isn't /designed/ to work with that media type? Or, they /may/ work, depending on the brand, but they're not 'officially' supported by the drive manufacturer.) So, is it the case under Linux that the internal drive does _not_ recognize the media, but that the same media works fine, in the same drive, under Win7 and PCLinuxOS? FWIW, I have had the experience of needing to update a CD/DVD-RW drive's firmware (using an OEM supplied Windows installer) before the device would work reliably under Linux. regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. There is no problem with the burner hardware, I am presently using PCLinuxOS to check it, and k3b recognizes the disc and is able to burn. It also works in Win7 on this same computer. The problem is solely with openSuse 12.3, and seems to be a software issue. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
