Anyone have any ideas about how to fix this?
Hi Mark, You were very specific about your software versions and you at least listed the troubleshooting steps you've taken ... which is extremely helpful ... but you were not very informative with respect to: 1. the type of media that is failing (make/brand & type of disc) 2. the affected drive make, model & firmware version 3. error messages (i.e. launch k3b via cli; also check logs) Also, your descriptions of the symptoms are a little confusing: You wrote "... trying to get k3b to recognize a disc in the disc drive without success... also tried Brassero ... but ... same problem. Neither program recognizes that there is a disc in the drive" At first glance, the problem you're describing is unrecognized media. Recognizing media is usually an internal function of the drive. k3b and Brassero merely convey (report) such failures. Then you write "There is no problem with the burner hardware ... using PCLinuxOS ... k3b recognizes the disc and is able to burn. ... also works in Win7 ..." And finally, (from above) "... it is only working half-way. ... It reads one DVD writer, but not the other installed DVD writer."" Please clarify what you mean by "it" :-) There's a lot of context switching happening in your writing here. Assuming "It" here means k3b, you seem to be saying that the attached external drive works fine with the otherwise unrecognized discs (media) while those same discs are not being recognized by the internal drive. (Again, this seems to be describing an 'unrecognized media' problem. Maybe the internal drive isn't /designed/ to work with that media type? Or, they /may/ work, depending on the brand, but they're not 'officially' supported by the drive manufacturer.) So, is it the case under Linux that the internal drive does _not_ recognize the media, but that the same media works fine, in the same drive, under Win7 and PCLinuxOS? FWIW, I have had the experience of needing to update a CD/DVD-RW drive's firmware (using an OEM supplied Windows installer) before the device would work reliably under Linux. regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
