As last test. If it is possible try to attach an external DVD/CD Burner unit and check if disck is recognized. If recognized most probably your original DVD/CD hardware unit has a physical failure (e.g. broken cables, lens, etc...). In that case change the unit and problem will go.

Hi, I found the answer to the problem in an old post on the forum for opensuse 11.1. The fix for the problem is to go to Yast> Security&Users> User and Group management> Edit User> and add "disk" and "cd-rom" groups. After doing this k3b recognized a disk and was able to burn information to the disk.
