To all of the SLE, I just upgrade 7.1 to 7.3 on my home machine. It was flawless..even the nVidia drivers worked like a charm. I had NOT 1 issue...everything is working..pretty damn well. And as Mads would say " It's fucking brilliant! Just out of interest, was this a 'clean' 7.1 install? Or had you upgraded with only SuSE produced RPMs Or... had you upgraded from other sources

This install of 7.1 dates back to January...and I tend to compile a LOT of stuff. I told it to just update the same rpm's that were installed. I have all the src that I compile in /usr/src so I know what I've installed and what I haven't..so I can just recompile if something is cocked up. So far I have ran everything I normally do and nothing has been messed up..even Sendmail isn't biting me in the ass. ;) ->Or... had you upgraded from other sources I either use SuSE RPM's or I compile from src...I rarely use another distributions RPM's mainly because we are all not on the same sheet of music yet. When everyone is using the same version of GCC and Glibc then it won't be so bad. Also, once the LSB is a standard for everyone *cough*Redhat/Mandrake*cough* then things won't be so bad. -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal" -AE

Ditto. SuSE 7.2 -> 7.3 flawless. The 7.2 box only used stock SuSE RPMs.

Ben - I have a working version of 7.1 running with very few problems, most of which are my fault for not venturing forward with a replacement for netscape. I've purchased the 7.3 pro and want to do an upgrade to what i currently have. I've installed turboprint (commercial license) and the licensed version of the OSS sound drivers because i neded both to get each application to perform appropriately. Do you have any advice that I might need prior to performing the upgrade; i don't want to contaminate what I already heve working. dave

Well, I don't use OSS..I've used Alsa since it start supporting my SBlive properly..but I do know that you can get a free upgrade that should work with the newest kernel. I would get that and have it on hand ready to install. I know absolutely nothing about Turboprint so I can't be of help there. What I did was check the box that says upgrade only installed RPM's..so it will look at your rpm db and if it has a new version then the installed version it will update this. It worked very well for me. If you have any issues I am sure that we (list) can help you solve them. :) -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal" -AE

My licensed copy of OSS for the 2.4 kernel didn't survive my ''upgrade" to 7.3. It tried to recompile itself and when that didn't work it automatically went out to the 4front website and to download a version of OSS for the 2.4.10-4GB kernel. There were none available, yet. I had other problems with the 'upgrade' route. While root seemed to survive the process quite well, my user account did not end up with a working KDE desktop. Nothing else seemed to work, neither. So, I saved what I wanted to keep, including my license files, and did a clean install, including reformatting the drives, installing ReiserFS (Which I had used before 7.2 and wanted to use again) and chose the 'almost everything' option. The result was absolutely the best Linux install I've ever had. My SBLive was detected and configured with alsa beautifully. So was my PlexStore 8432 CD-R drive, which I can now burn CDs with, something I could never get to work in 7.2. I can't say much for the upgrade process but the clean install is the best ever. Jerry

If one is running a stock KDE from 7.2 then it's not going to work because KDE in 7.2 was 2.0.1 and there were like 4 revisions that came out between 2.0.1 and 2.2.1 if you remove the following files then it should work... ~/.DCOP* .MCOP* .mcop* /tmp/<all kde related files and directories> mv .kde2 to kde2 and let it be recreated..then move over things such as kmail address books and bookmark files. There are somethings that 2.2.1 does like about 2.2.1 files..and it's a KDE2 thing..can't be help :) This is why I try to use ftp.suse.com as much as possible to keep up to date. YOU won't update to 2.2.1 because it's not in the 7.2 directory .. it's in the supplementry directory. I actually see no need for OSS unless you have a REALLY off the wall card. Alsa supports SO many cards now that OSS isn't actually needed in most cases. -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal" -AE

When you regularly upgrade your kernel, ALSA gets *really* annoying. I went back to OSS on my work laptop because I simply don't have the time to waste. I simply download the latest version whenever I upgrade and I've never had any trouble as long as I stay away from 'ac' and 'pre' kernels. Mantel's are fine. 4Front's tech-support is great, too. -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com

I'll second that last remark. I remember when I was having trouble getting OSS to work on a previous Linux installation. One evening, I dashed off an e-mail to 4Front describing the problem. I exchanged e-mails with them, and after about 10 e-mails (five in each direction) or so, it was working fine. Maybe that doesn't sound all that remarkable -- but this e-mail exchange took about an hour and a half! Plus: imagine my surprise when I got an issue of Linux Journal not long after this, and found that I'd been conversing by e-mail with one of OSS's primary developers (Dev, I think his name is). I'd like to see ANYBODY top that kind of service! Regards, Tim Sunrise in Stockholm today: 7:35 Sunset in Stockholm today: 15:28 My rail transit photos at http://www.kynerd.nu
