[opensuse] milestone 5
Is 11.2 milestone 5 a good way of getting KDE 4.3 without starting from the 11.1, DVD adding the factory repo and doing the long download? Is the milestone very buggy? Does anyone use it? very? Not in my opinion.

Since 28 June doing daily "zypper dup" w/o many problems and the *only* system downtime is from rebooting for a new kernel. Karl Hi .
If you got a decent internet connection then getting it to function in a fairly useable manner is easy (or it was for me once i got round the freakin ATI crap) all i did was boot into runlevel 3 ie init 3 on the grub options line while booting, Then login as root and run "zypper up" now there are folks out there that are going to say dont ect ect ect all i ca say is it fixed the multiple problems i had . I don't even get as far as doing any "running" :-( . I have now downloaded 3 copies of MS5 - KDE Live CD - and they all end up with a pitch black screen after some whirring activity of the CDs. So I have been playing around with Kubuntu 9.10 - which is very nice, and all things work after a painless installation. (Oh, every copy of the MS I have so far downloaded - beginning with MS2 - produce an error message, "no properly formatted MD5 checksum lines found" when I do the md5sum check on the isos.) As the OP who has followed factory through to Yesterday that seems strange. What I was really looking for in something that installs KDE 4.3 out of the box. That's what my customers have seen and want. May ask what you need and why it doesn't work? Just looking for a quick way of doing it. It's a time and money thing really. A quick way. If I have to install the original 11.1 though, I shall. Looks Like milestone 6 next week is the one. It is already available: <quote> M6 just has arrived at ftp5.gwdg.de. Viele Gruesse Eberhard Moenkeberg (emoenke@gwdg.de, em@kki.org) </quote> Note: there have been reports here and in factory of difficulties with "live-CD" installs of ms5 and ms6. I have arrived there via "zypper dup" updates beginning 23 June build 143. I do not know what difficulties will ensue, but I am sure they will be addressed but opensuse-factory would be the place to gain the best knowledge/attention. gud luk, -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Lynn, I don't think *that* version is very suitable for XP converts. It is a DEVELOPMENT version with all the bugs still attached. The URL given earlier is MUCH better because it installs a current release (11.1) of SuSE upgraded with KDE4.3 and will be much easier and safer to install than an 'alpha/beta' version. Milestone 6, which is what you will get from the /developer site *might* work on many machines but it *won't* work without significant bugs on *any* machine that I know of. Knowledgable people used to "tinkering" with their systems in more than a few cases, have gotten the 'M' series of releases for 11.2 to work relatively reliably, but there are a lot of things not yet set up for general use for the average user....much less a 'newbie'. Just my $.02 worth... Cheers, and good luck.... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

OK. Have deleted that download. Will try the binner download instead. When I have the live CD can I then go on to install a full system? Does it set up the repos I need eg for Yast? Might I suggest VirtualBox instead of a test box? I try out *all* new versions on a VM and if it doesn't crash and burn, then I try it on a real machine. VirtualBox is free, available in openSuSE versions from within Yast and easy to set up. About the only thing that won't work in the OSE version (free) is USB support, but if you need that, go to Sun (vendor) and download their proprietary version which does support USB and is also free (to individuals, at least) and is also available for most flavors of openSuSE. I happen to like the Sun version because it (to me) has a smoother interface out of the box, but the OSE version works quite well also. A VM is a great test box :)
Thanks again. downloading the binner CD now
L x I think you'll be happier given your 'audience'. 11.2M5&6 are 'fairly' stable at the moment, but it *is* alpha/beta level of development. OpenSuSE no longer *calls* it 'beta', but that is what it is and I wouldn't inflict it on Windoze XP converts with little or no experience with Linux or openSuSE.
