Hi: I'm in the middle of setting HP laserjet 5P as default printer locally, on SuSE7.1PRO. Cups installed, YAST2 printer add went like this: add printer msg: no dev/lp? found click next, sel dev/lp0 and test msg: no problems [at this point the printer responded and tried to print] next, select HPLJ5P and next drivers selected and test msg: could not print, chk /usr/lib/YaST2/suse_testpg.ps checked and it's there. When I cli the following comes back: h:~ > lpr /etc/passwd lpr: error - no default destination available. check of etc/printcap: lp-ascii|lp1|y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp|y2prn_lp.upp ascii:\ :lp=/dev/lp0:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp/acct:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp:\ :la@:mx#0:\ :tr=:cl:sh: Do I have 2 probs, one with reading suse_testpg.ps and one with finding the destination available? Or are they the same? Any help appreciated. Thanks, Tom
Hi Tom, Firstly I have NEVER had luck installing any printer using Yast2 either with lprold nor cups. To install cups please REINSTALL both cups.rpm and cups-driver.rpm using yast. Also make sure lprold has been removed. This makes sure all the setup Yast2 has done is removed and we start a fresh. Once cups is installed, all you have to do to install a printer is:- 1) Using your favourite web browser type in the following location localhost:631/admin 2) You will be asked for user/password. Log in as root 3) On the web page you will see a button marked Add Printer. 4) Just follow the directions selecting the port and printer. 5) Once you have finished - select the Manage printer and set the defaults for your printer. 6) Again from the Manage Printers Menu ask it to print a test page. You may have to try a couple of different printer drivers to find which driver works best for you. Regards, Graham Smith _______________________________________ On 11-Aug-2001 tom poe wrote:

check of etc/printcap: lp-ascii|lp1|y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp|y2prn_lp.upp ascii:\ :lp=/dev/lp0:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp/acct:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp:\ :la@:mx#0:\ :tr=:cl:sh:

Hi, Graham: Did the delete lprold thing, I think. I removed the paper.ps and paper.txt files from the directory. Went to YaST and deleted CUPS and CUPS DRIVERS. Installed CUPS and CUPS DRIVERS. ran locate on CUPS and returned about five times the number of files I had previously with YaST2!!! Now, the http://localhost:631/admin command returns a "cannot connect to localhost" message. I can do http://localhost:901 for Samba. So, went to /etc/services and checked 631. This is ipp for printer protocol. Tried ipp://localhost:631/admin, but that didn't work either. Any other options? Thanks, Tom

Well, leaving the :631 issue for a moment. Went to the Printing HowTo. The author says, PDQ, my boy. So, installed it. YaST2 lists lp parallel printer, as default printer. Yet, when I type the command, lpr env.pl, this: tompoe@aether:~ > pdq env.pl Error. No printer specified, and no default printer defined. tompoe@aether:~ > lpr env.pl bash: lpr: command not found tompoe@aether:~ > su Password: root@aether:/home/tompoe > lpr env.pl bash: lpr: command not found root@aether:/home/tompoe > Now, with YaST2, the test for parallel port hits the HPlj5P just fine. The test page for printing fails, though. If I could just merge the 2 damn tests, I should be home free. <grin> I really need to troubleshoot this thing, and wish someone could id the file that defines the default printer for me. /etc/printcap /etc/printcap: lp-ascii|lp1|y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp|y2prn_lp.upp ascii:\ :lp=/dev/lp0:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp/acct:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/y2prn_lp.upp--ascii-lp:\ :la@:mx#0:\ :tr=:cl:sh: /usr/sbin has lpd. /usr/sbin is not in my $PATH. Is that significant? Any ideas? Thanks, Tom

PDQ uses different configuration files. The "xpdq" program lets you setup the printers, and select one as the default. You may need to be root to setup system wide printers. Also as root, use the command: ln /usr/local/bin/pdq /usr/local/bin/lpr. This links the 'lpr' command to 'pdq'. PDQ is a nice printing system for home users. There's no printing daemon constantly running and listening on network ports. And it has a pretty nice graphical interface. -- Robert Wohlfarth rjwohlfar@bigfoot.com "Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?" -- Matthew 6:25b

Hi Tom I missed one step out. Yast does not start cupsd for some reason. Issue the following from root /etc/init.d/cups start to check to see if it is running ps -e | grep cupsd from here on you should be able to run cups. Regards, Graham Smith _______________________________________
